Job Description

Lead a high-trust outpatient clinic. Build access for a rural community. Shape the future of care. Decatur County Hospital, a trusted Critical Access Hospital serving southern Iowa, is seeking a Board-Certified Internal Medicine Physician to step into a high-visibility Medical Director role within our outpatient clinic. Available What You'll Do As Medical Director, you'll lead both care delivery and operational improvement across our outpatient clinic: Lead clinic operations to improve access, continuity, and patient experience Partner with admin leadership to streamline workflows and remove barriers to care Drive CAH-aligned quality initiatives (patient safety, compliance, performance metrics) Develop and mentor a strong team culture across providers and staff Represent outpatient services in strategic planning and hospital leadership forums What Sets This Role Apart High autonomy in shaping clinic strategy and workflows Direct community impact - your leadership improves access for patients who depend on local care Close-knit, mission-driven environment where collaboration is the norm Opportunity to innovate in a flexible, resourceful Critical Access Hospital setting Leadership visibility with hospital executives and board members What Success Looks Like (First 6-12 Months) In your first year, you'll be positioned to make a real mark by: Building trust and alignment across providers, staff, and leadership Identifying the top 2-3 operational bottlenecks and implement improvements Strengthening care coordination across outpatient + inpatient + community settings Establishing consistent quality and workflow standards that support growth and stability Qualifications MD or DO with Board Certification in Internal Medicine Active or eligible medical license in Iowa Minimum 3 years of clinical experience (leadership experience preferred) Strong understanding of rural health / Critical Access operations (or willingness to learn) Proven ability to lead teams, build relationships, and drive change Commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care What We Offer Protected administrative time Relocation + sign-on incentives (case-by-case) Leadership stipend (in addition to clinical compensation) CME support + leadership development pathway Comprehensive benefits package You'll Be Supported By A collaborative administrative leadership team A dedicated clinical staff committed to patient-centered care A community that values relationships and continuity What Sets DCH Apart The only Critical Access Hospital in Iowa to achieve ACC Chest Pain Center Accreditation, demonstrating our commitment to nationally recognized cardiac excellence.
