175 Fulton Ave in Hempstead What drives the core purpose of this job: The Medical Director is a licensed physician with overall responsibility for all medical services provided to clients of the New Path Treatment Center, including medication assisted treatment/medications for opioid use disorder (MAT/MOUD), and for the supervision of all medical staff and any nurse practitioners, in accordance with 14 NYCRR Parts 800 and 822 and the program's OASAS operating certificate.
What are the key responsibilities:
Maintain overall responsibility for all medical services provided by the program consistent with the program's OASAS operating certificate and applicable OASAS regulations and clinical standards. Maintain overall responsibility for the development, implementation, periodic review, and revision of medical policies and procedures and for ongoing training related to routine medical care; specialized medical and psychiatric services; specialized medications including
MAT/MOUD
; medical and psychiatric emergency care; screening for and reporting of transmissible infections in accordance with law; and public health education including prevention and harm reduction strategies. Provide direct supervision of all medical staff (including physicians, nurse practitioners, and nurses) in the performance of medical services, including prescribing, administration, monitoring, and documentation of all medications used in treatment, with particular attention to controlled substances and
MAT/MOUD.
Ensure program compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to medical services, including 14 NYCRR Parts 800 and 822 and the program's OASAS operating certificate. Assist in the development of necessary referral and linkage relationships with other institutions and agencies including, but not limited to, general or specialty hospitals and nursing homes, health-related facilities, home health agencies, hospital outpatient departments, diagnostic and treatment facilities, laboratories and related resources Review case files, including medication review. Phone contacts with other medical/treatment professionals as needed Conduct office and/or virtual examinations, psychiatric and medical evaluations, and necessary testing of clients, including ongoing assessment of the appropriateness, safety, and effectiveness of MAT/MOUD and other prescribed medications. Provide professional consultation to program staff, including psychiatric nurse practitioners and other prescribers, regarding diagnosis, treatment planning, medication management, co occurring disorders, and risk management. Prepare and review required medical documentation and reports, including ongoing and final case reports, incident and critical event reviews, and any medical sections of reports required by OASAS or other oversight entities. Provision of staff training as needed. What key knowledge, skills, and abilities are required to excel in this role: Licensed physician (MD or DO) currently registered to practice medicine in New York State. At least one year of education, training, and/or experience in the treatment of substance use disorders; minimum of two years of practice in addiction services preferred. Board certification in addiction medicine from a certifying entity within four years from start date, or subspecialty board certification in addiction psychiatry consistent with any applicable OASAS waivers Valid DEA registration and eligibility to prescribe controlled substances in New York State; meets all federal and state requirements related to prescribing medications for opioid use disorder and other controlled substances, including use of the Prescription Monitoring Program (iSTOP) as required. Completion and maintenance of required OASAS and agency trainings for Medical Directors. Must be proficient in computer applications or other automated systems such as spreadsheets, Microsoft Office applications, calendar, and email and/or database software necessary to perform work assignments. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills required.
