No General Summary:
The Release of Information Specialist, under the direction of the HIM Director, will release health information to authorized individuals while protecting patient confidentiality, maintaining federal regulations and complying with accreditation requirements.
Requirements:
High school diploma. RHIT, RHIA or Certified medical/office assistant preferred. Minimum of one year HIM operational experience required. Knowledge of medical terminology preferred. Effective communication and listening skills and the ability to respond quickly under pressure. Must be fluent in English.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Fulfill requests received by mail, telephone, fax or walk-ins for patient health information contained in the medical record and/or billing record in accordance with federal and state laws and HIPAA regulations. Verify all components on the Release of Information authorization have been completed as appropriate. Return an incomplete or unacceptable request to requestor with an explanation. Assure completeness of the medical record prior to fulfilling the request. Log requests into tracking system. Assist hospital staff, patients, and other visitors in the department and throughout the hospital as needed. Assist physicians and other direct care providers as requested in record completion in accordance with established policies. Provide departmental coverage as needed. Foster respect for patient privacy by maintaining confidentiality in all phases of work. Participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives. Perform other related duties as assigned.
