Health Information Management (HIM) Specialist East Houston Medical Center - Baytown, Texas (Coming Soon) East Houston Medical Center is expanding its presence through a new Baytown campus, a modern facility designed to deliver accessible, efficient, and deeply patient-centered care to a growing community. To support this exciting growth, East Houston Medical Center is seeking a polished, detail‑driven Health Information Management (HIM) Specialist to support the integrity, organization, and confidentiality of patient health records in a fast‑paced hospital environment. Position summary The HIM Specialist plays a key role in the Health Information Management department by compiling, processing, and maintaining patient health records in a manner consistent with medical, administrative, ethical, legal, and regulatory requirements. This position supports scanning, indexing, chart analysis, record retrieval, release‑of‑information preparation, and general HIM workflows to ensure records are complete, accurate, and readily available for authorized use. Key responsibilities Prepare, scan, index, and file medical documents into the electronic and/or paper record accurately and within defined timeframes. Review records for basic completeness, including signatures, dates, and required forms, and flag deficiencies for follow‑up. Compile, process, and maintain patient files in accordance with hospital policies, legal requirements, and professional standards. Retrieve and route charts and documents to authorized clinical and administrative staff as requested. Assist with release‑of‑information processes by preparing records and verifying that requests meet authorization and privacy requirements. Accurately enter and update demographic and record information in the electronic health record and related systems. Maintain strict confidentiality of protected health information and follow all HIPAA and hospital privacy and security policies. Support departmental audits, record reviews, and quality initiatives by organizing and supplying needed documentation. Respond to phone calls and inquiries to the HIM department with professional, service‑oriented communication. Perform other HIM duties as assigned to support efficient, compliant department operations. Minimum requirements High school diploma or GED required. Prior experience in health information management, medical records, or a healthcare office setting preferred. Basic knowledge of medical terminology preferred. Proficiency with keyboarding, office equipment, and basic computer applications required. Strong attention to detail, accuracy, organization, and time management required. Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and follow privacy and security procedures required. Effective verbal and written communication skills and a professional, courteous demeanor required. Preferred qualifications Coursework, certificate, or an associate degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or a related field preferred. Experience working in an acute care hospital or multi‑provider healthcare environment preferred. Familiarity with electronic health record systems, document imaging platforms, and chart analysis or deficiency tracking preferred. Awareness of coding, documentation, and compliance concepts is a plus, even if the role is non‑coding focused. Requirements Minimum requirements High school diploma or GED required.
