Job Description

Michigan Surgical Center is hiring a dependable, organized, and patient-focused Receptionist / Authorization Specialist to join our team. This dual-role position is responsible for creating a welcoming experience at the front desk while also ensuring all prior authorizations and insurance verifications are completed before surgery. Receptionist Responsibilities Greet patients, family members, and visitors in a friendly and courteous manner Act as an information liaison for patients, families, and guests Check in patients and distribute necessary materials Answer questions or refer patients to the appropriate staff Maintain patient confidentiality at all times Maintain and tidy the reception area, coffee station, and conference room Answer multi-line phones professionally and relay messages accurately Perform data entry and maintain accurate documentation Complete delegated administrative tasks such as copying, filing, word processing, and calling patients Participate in in-services and committee meetings as needed Perform other duties as assigned Authorization Responsibilities Verify primary and secondary insurance coverage and enter accurate information Scrub the surgery schedule daily to confirm eligibility and fix errors Obtain and document all required prior authorizations and referrals Notify surgeon's office and patient of any uncovered services Coordinate with surgeon offices on coverage issues or outstanding balances Inform patients of their financial responsibility prior to surgery Collaborate with the Business Office Manager on payment plans Attend insurance meetings or payer website trainings for updates Update internal process documentation as payer requirements change Assist with insurance-related patient questions and AR collections Work Environment & Schedule Busy outpatient surgical setting Hours vary depending on surgery schedule (Monday-Thursday, 32-36 hours/week) No weekends, minimal overtime possible Must be flexible and reliable, with ability to open facility when schedule Skills & Competencies Excellent customer service and communication skills Friendly, calm, and professional demeanor Detail-oriented with strong organizational and multitasking ability Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt in a fast-paced setting Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic eligibility tools Comfortable using phones, fax, copier, and credit card terminals Able to maintain patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance The Center is open Monday through Thursday & NO WEEKENDS, ON-CALL, or
WORK ON STANDARD HOLIDAYS.
Work hours for this position are Monday through Thursday, with shifts ranging from 5:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Start times may vary based on the surgical schedule. Shifts are typically 9 hours.
