Medication Administration & Documentation The morning shift is centered around the "Morning Med Pass," which is often the largest of the day.
Morning Med Pass:
Administering scheduled medications for breakfast and mid-morning, ensuring the "Six Rights" of medication administration are followed for every resident.PRN Management:
Assessing residents who request "as needed" medications for pain or indigestion and documenting the effectiveness of those medications later in the shift.Blood Glucose Monitoring:
Performing finger-sticks for diabetic residents and administering insulin as prescribed before or after meals.MAR Accuracy:
Ensuring every medication given is initialed in the Medication Administration Record (MAR) immediately to prevent double-dosing. 2. Clinical Monitoring & Reporting Because you are present during the most active part of the resident's day, your observations are critical for the nursing team.Vital Signs:
Taking and recording blood pressure, pulse, or temperatures as required before administering specific heart or blood pressure medications. Change inCondition:
Monitoring for "sundowning" recovery or new symptoms such as confusion, cough, or skin redness, and reporting these to the Resident Care Coordinator (RCC) or Administrator.Shift Report:
Participating in a "hand-off" with the outgoing night shift to learn about any incidents, falls, or PRNs given overnight. 3. Resident Care & Social Support In many facilities, the Med Tech also assists with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) during the busy morning hours.ADL Assistance:
Helping residents with morning grooming, dressing, and escorting them to the dining room for breakfast and lunch.Meal Supervision:
Monitoring residents in the dining room for choking risks or changes in appetite, which can be an early sign of illness.Hydration:
