ALBEMARLE-CHARLOTTESVILLE REGIONAL JAIL ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VIRGINIA CLASS DESCRIPTION 2026
Hiring Range based on experience and education: $43,092-$69,111
CLASS TITLE:
REGISTERED MEDICATION AIDE GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS
This position involves providing medication administration and limited health services to inmates in a secure correctional facility. The Registered Medication Aide (RMA) assists licensed nursing staff by administering medications in accordance with the Virginia Board of Nursing regulations, monitoring inmate reactions, maintaining accurate medical records, and ensuring compliance with institutional health policies. Work is performed under direct or indirect supervision of a licensed nurse and within the operational policies of the facility and applicable laws.
ESSENTIAL TASKS
The tasks listed below account for the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the class's work type as needed. Administers medications as prescribed by licensed healthcare professionals. Maintains accurate and timely documentation of medication administration, refusal, and any observed side effects or adverse reactions. Monitors and documents vital signs or other health indicators as instructed. Maintains and tracks medication inventory and medical supplies; reports low stock levels and requests refills as needed. Monitors expiration dates of supplies and medications and ensures removal and reporting of expired items. Secures and stores medications in accordance with state regulations and jail policy. Participates in emergency response efforts within the scope of practice. Maintains compliance with infection control and safety standards. Effectively communicates with inmates, correctional officers, and healthcare professionals while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries. Participates in required training, continuing education, and in-service programs. Maintains communication with jail contract pharmacy. Facilitates delivery and returns of medications.
DATA INVOLVEMENT, PEOPLE, AND THINGS
Data Involvement:
Requires accurate reading, interpretation, documentation, and entry of data into medical records systems. Must ensure compliance with HIPAA and facility policies.
People:
Engages with inmates, healthcare providers, correctional officers, and pharmacy personnel; requires a high level of professionalism, confidentiality, and interpersonal communication.
Things:
Uses medical tools (blood pressure cuffs, thermometers), medication carts, electronic health record (EHR) systems, and secure storage equipment for medications.
COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS
Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions, medical terminology, and medication protocols. Ability to recognize signs of medical distress or drug reactions and respond appropriately. Strong organizational skills for managing inventory and medication records. Sound judgment and decision-making in routine and emergency situations. Must remain alert and focused in a high-security and potentially high-stress environment.
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION
Education:
High school diploma or GED required.
Certification:
Must hold a current Registered Medication Aide (RMA) certification issued by the Virginia Board of Nursing.
Experience:
One (1) year of experience in a correctional facility, long-term care facility, or similar healthcare environment preferred.
Other Requirements:
Must successfully pass a criminal background check, drug screening, and meet facility clearance requirements. Certification of Nurse Aide or EMS training.

Must be able to stand, walk, and remain on feet for extended periods. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally. Visual acuity sufficient to read labels and observe patient conditions. Manual dexterity to operate medical equipment and administer medications. Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations. Work is performed inside a secure correctional facility. May be exposed to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, and potentially volatile or aggressive behavior from inmates. Must always comply with facility security and safety procedures. Makes routine decisions related to medication administration and reporting health concerns. Exercises sound judgment in recognizing and escalating medical issues to licensed nursing staff. Maintains discretion and confidentiality in handling sensitive inmate health information. Must assess safety risks and respond quickly within defined legal and ethical parameters.

The essential duties of this position require the employee to perform both physical and cognitive tasks associated with clinical care, medication administration, supervision, and emergency response within a secure correctional facility. These responsibilities include prolonged periods of standing and walking, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, responding rapidly to emergent situations, and performing tasks requiring fine motor skills and manual dexterity. The position also requires sufficient visual, auditory, and tactile acuity to safely assess, monitor, and interact with individuals in custody. Monitor and record vital signs, physiological responses, and medication effects using EMR (Electronic Medical Records) or EHR (Electronic Health Records) systems such as Epic or Cerner. Assist with medication reconciliation, documentation, and medical records management to ensure compliance with legal and organizational standards. Support patients with Alzheimer's, dementia, or other memory impairments through compassionate care tailored to their needs. Perform catheter care, tube feeding assistance, and other nursing tasks under supervision while maintaining safety standards. Collaborate with healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans for residents requiring hospice or senior care. Ensure all medical documentation is complete, accurate, and compliant with HIPAA guidelines for patient privacy and security. Qualifications Valid certification as a Registered Medication Technician (RMT) or equivalent licensure. Prior experience working in assisted living facilities, nursing homes, hospitals, or home care environments. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and medication administration procedures. Experience with EMR/EHR systems such as Epic or Cerner preferred. Familiarity with caring for individuals with developmental disabilities, Alzheimer's disease, dementia, or in hospice settings. Strong understanding of HIPAA regulations and medical recordkeeping standards. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team dedicated to patient-centered care.
