T. is a young man diagnosed with Down syndrome. He and his parents are looking for someone to support him at home and in the community (90266 area) on some evenings & one weekend day; up to 20 hours per week will be available. You will be part of a team supporting T. to become more independent at community activities like shopping, surf therapy, equine therapy, Dave & Buster's, the farmer's market, a local coffee shop, etc. Your travel and entrance costs will be paid for. Due to T.'s disability, he receives funding from the Harbor Regional Center (https://www.harborrc.org/) to meet his needs and for this service and staff. He is part of the Self-Determination Program (https://www.harborrc.org/services/self-determination-program-sdp/ ) which is why his family can select their own staff. Specifically, you will be hired by a Financial Management Service (FMS), SequoiaSD, as a W-2 employee paid hourly at a rate of up to $35 per hour, depending on experience; payment will be twice per month. You must be able to pass a background check and have a driving record acceptable to the FMS to qualify for this position, as well as reliable transportation to be able to drive T. as needed. YOU NEED TO
- Have your own, reliable, car, a clean driving record, and be able to drive T. into the community as needed.
- Be fun and creative! T. is fun and it will be better for both of you if you enjoy being with him.
- Be quick on your feet; T. can be fast on his.
- Be kind, flexible and patient, while remaining firm and giving clear directions.
- Preferably have experience with Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA)
- Be calm and don't raise your voice, while remaining consistent in what you ask him to do.
- Be organized and prepared for each day
- Be a team player who can work well with his current support staff.
- Make sure T. completes his chores & leaves his areas orderly.
- Know that T.
's family is here to help you! To them, his Down syndrome is not a disability; it's a different ability. Please ask his family if you have questions or concerns; they love him just like he is, and they think you will too.
