JOB DESCRIPTION STUDENT & FAMILY SUPPORT SPECIALIST
Elementary Schools 5 Hours/Middle Schools 5.75 Hours 11 Months School Year - Range 26 BASIC
FUNCTION
Under the general direction of Rio School District administration, the Student and Family Support Specialist, as front-line staff for calls and visitors, will provide health and wellness support to students and families by providing information about services and assisting with general needs, assisting with enrollment into school and other approved support programs, inputting data for the maintenance of health and wellness records, and performing in a variety of other duties as needed to support the goals of the Rio School District.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
1. Work as a team with other Rio staff including the counselor and OSFS (Office of Student and Family Services) staff members to provide a supportive environment that benefits the social/emotional and general health and wellness of all students. 2. Welcome visitors, receive phone calls, offer assistance to students and families as needed, takes messages or refers callers or visitors to appropriate personnel. 3. Assists families with the enrollment process for school and appropriate support programs; includes assistance with filling out forms as needed; maintain student cumulative files. 4. Perform routine first aid procedures and assist in screening ill or injured children according to established procedures, administers CPR in an emergency situations, and reports serious injury/illness to school nurse. 5. Arrange for sick students to go home; making all contacts per district guidelines. 6. Provide clerical duties and support associated with health and wellness screening, follow-up on referrals for treatment, and assists in audit of student immunization records according to established procedures. 7. Maintains updated student health and wellness records as appropriate; including health and wellness entries into cumulative files and data systems. 8. Maintains and monitors files of students with special health concerns; assures timely receipt of appropriate health records. 9. Assists in preparation, distribution and maintenance of safety supplies and equipment as appropriate through the site and district safety plan. 10. Assists students and families and offers support in efforts to improve attendance. 11. Support positive family development, health and wellness by referring families to appropriate community resources as needed. 12. Keep accurate records of contacts and assistance provided. Follow procedures identified by Rio School District, in regards to data entry and reporting using computer software provided. 13. Provide clerical assistance to administrators and other staff as needed; schedules appointments, make parent contacts, types correspondence, reports and memoranda, prepare lists and oversee timely distribution and return of materials. 14. Operates a variety of office equipment including, but not limited to, computer, typewriter, calculator, telephone, fax, two-way radio, copier, etc. 15. May perform duties of School Office Manager in absence thereof. 16. Enrolls new and transferring students, obtains required registration information and related forms. 17. Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
1. Basic principles and practices of supporting and strengthening students and families. 2. Knowledge of local community resources 3. Strong interpersonal skills demonstrating respect, acceptance and patience 4. District and site level policy, procedures, terminology and goals. 5. CPR and First Aid techniques and health and safety regulations 6. Principles and procedures of record-keeping Ability to: 1. Ability to relate to families from a strength-based model 2. Administer first aid and/or CPR to students as needed 3. Assist in the administration of activities and operations 4. Assist with the outreach and in encouraging participation of parents and students 5. Maintain confidentiality of information obtained during the course of work 6. Understand and follow oral and written instructions 7. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work 8. Work well both independently and within a team 9. Ability to communicate effectively in both English and Spanish is required. 10. Keep accurate records 11. Maintain telephone and data techniques and etiquette 12. Operate standard office equipment; computer, fax, copier, phone, simple medical equipment, etc. 13. Maintain positive interpersonal skills using patience and courtesy when working with those contacted during the course of work 14. Complete work with many interruptions 15. Perform general clerical duties such as filing, duplicating, typing, data entry, and maintaining records 16. Learn and apply district policy and procedures related to health and wellness; including record keeping 17. Type thirty (30) words per minute net from clear copy 18. May translate written material from English to a designated second language and from that language into English; may translate conversations or provide interpretive services for non-English speaking individuals and others.
Training and Experience:
1. High school diploma and any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying 2. Experience working with organizations within a family resource center setting 3. Experience in working with a culturally diverse community and families
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
1. Valid State of California Drivers License 2. CPR and Red Cross First Aid Certificates 3. High school diploma 4. Ability to speak, read and write in Spanish and English
WORKING CONDITIONS
1. General school office environment including nursing/first aid area 2. Subject to exposure to communicable or infectious diseases 3. Subject to many demands on time and constant interruptions 4. Subject to sitting, bending or stooping, lifting and walking 5. Subject to working in a school environment and exposure to sunlight and other outside conditions 6. Subject to working at a computer video work station(s), operating computer keyboards, looking at computer video screens.
