Full Job Description Position Summary:
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides direct care and support to individuals with developmental and/or intellectual disabilities in a residential group home setting. DSPs assist individuals with daily living activities, promote independence, and support participation in home and community life. This role requires a compassionate, person-centered approach while ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all individuals served. DSPs may also support individuals with behavioral needs and are expected to follow established behavior support strategies.
Key Responsibilities:
Direct Care & Daily Living Support Assist individuals with activities of daily living (ADLs), including personal hygiene, dressing, grooming, toileting, and meal preparation Support individuals in developing independent living skills and routines Encourage participation in recreational, social, and community activities Provide transportation to appointments and community outings as required Person-Centered Support Implement Individual Service Plans (ISPs) in a respectful and consistent manner Promote choice, independence, and dignity in all interactions Build positive relationships with individuals served Behavioral Support Follow Behavior Support Plans (BSPs) and utilize approved strategies to support individuals with behavioral needs Recognize early signs of distress and use de-escalation techniques as trained Maintain a calm and supportive approach during challenging situations Report behavioral incidents according to agency policy Health & Safety Ensure a clean, safe, and organized home environment Monitor individuals' health and report concerns to appropriate staff Administer medications as trained and authorized Follow all safety protocols and emergency procedures Documentation & Compliance Complete daily documentation, including progress notes and incident reports, accurately and on time Follow all agency policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements Maintain confidentiality and respect individuals' rights Team Collaboration Communicate effectively with House Managers, Crisis DSPs, and other team members Participate in team meetings and trainings as required Support a positive team environment and collaborate to meet individual needs
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities preferred but not required Ability to learn and implement behavior support strategies Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Preferred Skills:
Experience in a residential or caregiving setting Knowledge of person-centered practices and basic behavior support principles Ability to remain patient, dependable, and flexible
Work Expectations:
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays Willingness to provide hands-on care and support as needed Ability to respond appropriately to behavioral or medical situations
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift as needed Ability to assist individuals with mobility and transfers
