Job Description

The Behavioral Specialist serves as a key resource for campers and staff, providing support in addressing personal, relational, and camp-related concerns. This role is responsible for fostering a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment while maintaining a positive and proactive presence in all camp programs. The Behavioral Specialist plays an active role in promoting emotional well-being and supporting a positive camp experience for all participants. Essential Functions:
Assist in preparing and leading Administrative Staff Training and All Staff Training sessions Review Camper "Tips for Success" forms and address identified needs Provide support to campers and staff experiencing personal or camp-related concerns Report serious incidents (e.g., safety concerns, rule violations, abuse) to Camp Directors Communicate with parents regarding situations requiring their involvement and support Comply with all state laws related to reporting and documenting child abuse Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming office environment Document and address situations impacting emotional or physical safety Remain accessible to staff and campers, offering ongoing guidance and support Mediate and intervene to improve relationships and overall camp experience Serve as a liaison between campers, staff, and administration, including support for international staff Coordinate special camper needs (e.g., laundry) with appropriate staff Promote a positive camp environment and high staff morale Participate in Administrator on Duty responsibilities and evening activities as assigned Model and reinforce core values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility Follow and enforce all camp policies and procedures Maintain positive relationships with parents, visitors, and the public Complete required documentation, including end-of-season reporting, in a timely manner Perform other duties as assigned Desire and ability to work with and relate to children and peers in an outdoor environment Minimum of three years of prior camp staff experience Background in social work, psychology, or experience supporting youth with diverse behavioral or social-emotional needs Sound judgment; strong listening, communication, and discretion skills Positive role model with high integrity and adaptability College senior or equivalent; must be at least 21 years old Current First Aid and Adult and Child CPR certifications Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record Ability to communicate, supervise, and work with assigned age groups and skill levels, and provide clear instruction Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess appropriateness, enforce safety regulations, and apply behavior management techniques Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and activity-related hazards Physical ability to respond appropriately to emergencies and administer first aid Ability to communicate with parents and state agencies and maintain confidential records The Behavioral Support Specialist provides guidance and support to campers and staff by addressing behavioral, social-emotional, and interpersonal needs. This role promotes a safe, inclusive, and positive environment, intervenes in challenging situations, and collaborates with staff and families to support participant well-being and a successful camp experience.
