Since 1985, BHCHP's mission has been to ensure unconditionally equitable and dignified access to the highest quality health care for all individuals and families experiencing homelessness in greater Boston. Over 10,000 homeless individuals are cared for by Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program each year. We are committed to ensuring that every one of these individuals has access to comprehensive health care, from preventative dental care to cancer treatment. Our clinicians, case managers, and behavioral health professionals work in more than 30 locations to serve some of our community's most vulnerable—and most resilient—citizens. Yes The Outpatient Technician (EMT-Trained) provides essential clinical and administrative support in a fast-paced outpatient clinic serving individuals residing in an emergency shelter. Working closely with the on-site clinic staff, this role focuses on patient intake, triage, monitoring, and emergency response. This position plays a critical role in delivering trauma-informed care to a highly vulnerable population, including individuals experiencing homelessness, substance use disorders, mental health conditions, and histories of trauma. The Outpatient Technician also serves as a key staffing bridge , helping maintain continuity of care and clinic operations. In situations where nursing coverage is unavailable, this role ensures ongoing support by responding to emergencies and engaging with clients outside of the clinic setting until appropriate clinical coverage is secured. This helps reduce delays in care and supports consistent, reliable coordination with community partners.Responsibilities:
Perform patient intake duties, verifying patient's information, scheduling patients in EPIC/ checking patients in, verifying patient insurance Obtain and document vital signs (e.g., blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, oxygen saturation) Conduct initial triage at clinic entry to assess urgency of care needs and prioritize appropriately Provide trauma-informed, patient-centered care that emphasizes safety, trust, and respect; provide direct clinical support to clinic staff during patient care activities Assist with sedation monitoring, ensuring safety and reporting changes promptly Respond to medical emergencies within the clinic and shelter setting in coordination with clinical staff Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with clinic protocols Support clinic workflow, organization, and patient flow to ensure efficient operations Engage with clients and respond to urgent needs outside of the clinic space when nursing staff are unavailable Help maintain continuity of services to minimize disruptions in care and confusion for clients and partner organizationsQualifications:
Current Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification required Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required 1 or more years working on an ambulance required Strong interpersonal and communication skills required; ability to work effectively in high-stress and unpredictable environments required Bilingual (Spanish, Haitian creole) preferred Training in de-escalation techniques and crisis management Experience working with underserved or homeless populations; experience with psych Knowledge and application of trauma-informed care principles; familiarity with substance use disorders and behavioral health conditions Cultural awareness, crisis intervention and de-escalation skills Strong situational awareness and sound judgment Team collaboration, flexibility, multitasking, and organization skillsCompensation and Benefits:
The compensation is $31.11 per hour. BHCHP full time employees are eligible for our competitive time off program, health, dental and vision insurance, 403B retirement savings plan, pre-tax MBTA pass program with 40% discount, additional compensation for demonstrated bilingual proficiency and more.
