As a Behavioral Health Technician at UNC Health Appalachian, you will play a vital role in supporting patients and the care team by providing compassionate, patient-centered support in a behavioral health setting. You will work closely with licensed nursing staff to ensure a safe, therapeutic environment while contributing to meaningful patient outcomes.
Compensation:
Starting pay begins at $18.05 /hour, based on experience, education, and internal equity
Schedule:
Variable shifts including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays

What You'll Do as a Behavioral Health Technician
Assist licensed nursing staff in delivering safe, effective patient care
Monitor patient behavior and report changes or concerns promptly
Support patients with daily activities and therapeutic interventions as directed
Maintain a safe, structured, and supportive environment for patients
Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team
Document observations and assist with maintaining accurate patient records
Follow all ARHS policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements
Promote a culture of compassion, respect, and accountability
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required
Experience:
Previous experience as a CNA or in a behavioral health setting preferred
Licenses/Certifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association required at hire
CNA certification (North Carolina) preferred
Crisis Prevention and Intervention (CPI) certification required (completed during orientation)
Skills & Abilities:
Ability to work under the direction of licensed clinical staff
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to remain calm and effective in high-stress situations
Knowledge of patient care principles and behavioral health practices
Ability to demonstrate exceptional customer service and compassion
Basic computer skills including EMR documentation
Physical & Work Environment
Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling ≥ 50 lbs
Prolonged standing, walking, and sitting throughout shifts
Frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, twisting, and reaching
Continuous hand, finger, and wrist dexterity
Frequent patient mobilization and close patient interaction
Regular exposure to bloodborne pathogens and healthcare environment hazards
Exposure to electrical/mechanical equipment, chemicals, and uneven surfaces
Irregular hours including days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and emergencies
