To perform administrative and management responsibilities that support the coordination of the student nurse anesthetist within the department of anesthesiology and perioperative areas practicing both autonomously and in collaboration with a variety of health care professionals on the inter-professional team to deliver high-quality evidence based anesthesia services. To assess patient care needs and to administer local, general, inhalational, intravenous, monitored anesthesia care, and other anesthetics for surgical, obstetrical and other medical procedures under the medical direction or supervision of an anesthesiologist. To assure safe and proper operation and quality control of equipment, techniques, and procedures. To analyze and evaluate Doctorate of Nursing Practice Student (DNPS) learning activities to assure established quality patient care. Education & Experience Graduate of an accredited program of nurse anesthesiology and four years of experience as a nurse anesthetist. Master's degree in nurse anesthesiology, nursing or related field.CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED
Mississippi RN license and an unrestricted license to practice as a nurse anesthetist.,Certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of agents, equipment, procedures and techniques for the provision of anesthesia. Clear verbal and written communication skills. Management and leadership skills. Knowledge of software applications, operational workflow processes. Analytical and problem resolution skills. Detailed knowledge of anesthesia equipment and products. Knowledge of AANA council of accreditation, Mississippi Board of Nursing, UMMC, joint commission and CMS rules and regulations related to DNPS training, billing and participation.RESPONSIBILITIES
Administer local, general, inhalational, intravenous, monitored anesthesia care and other anesthetics for surgical, medical or obstetrical procedures under the medical direction or supervision of an anesthesiologist. Supports safety initiatives when coordinating DNPSs by identifying possible risk in processes, procedures, and devices and communicates the same by reporting adverse events or near misses to appropriate management authority through participation in facility, department, or unit patient safety indicatives. Serves as project manager for DNPS quality, compliance, and educational initiatives in coordination with chief CRNA and vice-chair of education to insure that clinical processes and documentation are consistent with current scientific literature and internal and external requirements (UMMC bylaws, CMS conditions of participation, joint commission elements of performance, etc.). Participates in the continuous revision of or in the development of DNPS workflows, clinical processes and other departmental quality improvement initiatives for DNPSs while supporting the use of current infection prevention practices and behaviors by all in the department of anesthesiology and perioperative areas. Regularly participates in the activities of the departmental case review and supports the activities of the morbidity and mortality conference of the department of anesthesiology. Coordinates the preparation, organization, implementation, maintenance, and evaluation of all matters related to DNPS selection, onboarding, scheduling, assignments, and monitoring of DNPSs in conjunction with the anesthesia department office of education and the vice-chair of education when needed. Facilitates informal resolution of issues related to DNPSs such as disagreements between DNPSs and other departmental or hospital staff and makes recommendations, gives feedback, and initiates instruction for DNPS performance reviews. Confers with chair of anesthesiology, vice-chair of education, chief nurse anesthetist, and other pertinent individuals concerning policy recommendations, patient care, and operational issues. Acts as a liaison between the between DNPS affiliates and the department of anesthesiology to support clinical initiatives for DNPS planning, design, implementation and development. Oversees educational rotations and assessments of competencies for DNPSs (designing first then regularly updating educational and testing modules), while keeping track in electronic format of each DNPS's calendar and performance.
