The PMHNP assesses, diagnoses, and manages the mental health needs of patients, including prescribing medications, offering therapy, and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Patient Assessment and Diagnosis:
  • Conduct thorough psychiatric assessments to evaluate mental health status, including psychological, social, and physical factors.
  • Formulate accurate psychiatric diagnoses based on assessment findings.
Medication Management:
  • Prescribe and manage psychotropic medications, adjusting dosage and treatment plans as needed.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness and side effects of medications.
  • Educate patients and families about medications, potential side effects, and treatment options.
Therapeutic Interventions:
  • Provide individual, group, or family therapy based on the patient's needs and treatment plan.
  • Implement evidence-based therapeutic interventions to address mental health concerns.
Collaboration with
Healthcare Team:
  • Collaborate with psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to discuss treatment plans and patient progress.
Patient Education:
  • Educate patients and their families about mental health conditions, treatment options, and coping strategies.
  • Promote mental health awareness and provide resources for ongoing support.
Crisis Intervention:
  • Respond to and manage psychiatric emergencies and crises.
  • Collaborate with emergency services and coordinate appropriate interventions.
Documentation:
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date electronic health records, documenting assessments, diagnoses, treatment plans, and progress notes.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
Continuing Education:
  • Stay informed about the latest developments in psychiatric and mental health care.
  • Pursue ongoing education and training to enhance clinical knowledge and skills.
