Job Description

Role Overview The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in Pain Management provides comprehensive care to patients suffering from acute, chronic, or cancer-related pain. This role focuses on improving patient quality of life through clinical assessment, medication management, and the implementation of multimodal treatment plans.
Core Responsibilities Clinical Assessment:
Conduct thorough physical examinations and patient histories, focusing on the onset, duration, and intensity of pain, as well as psychosocial factors.
Treatment Planning:
Develop and implement evidence-based, individualized pain management plans that may include pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions.
Patient Education:
Counsel patients and families on treatment goals, the proper use of medications (including risk education for opioids), and lifestyle modifications to manage pain.
Procedural Support:
Assist with or perform minor interventional procedures such as trigger point injections, joint injections, or bursa injections, depending on state scope of practice and clinical setting.
Medication Management:
Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests. Manage prescriptions with a heavy emphasis on monitoring for efficacy, side effects, and potential misuse.
Collaboration:
Work closely with a multidisciplinary team, including physicians, physical therapists, and mental health professionals, to ensure a holistic approach to patient care.
Required Qualifications Education:
Master s or Doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited program.
Licensure:
Current, unrestricted APRN license in the state of practice.
Certification:
Board certification (NP or CNS) and preferably a specialty certification in Pain Management (e.g., through the ASIPP or ANCC).
DEA Registration:
Valid DEA registration with prescriptive authority for controlled substances.
Skills & Competencies Clinical Expertise:
Strong understanding of neuroanatomy, pain pathways, and the pharmacology of analgesics.
Analytical Thinking:
Ability to interpret complex diagnostic imaging (MRI, CT scans) and integrate findings into a clinical plan.
Communication:
Exceptional interpersonal skills to handle difficult conversations regarding pain expectations and medication tapering.
Compliance Knowledge:
Deep understanding of state and federal regulations regarding the prescription of controlled substances.
