Job Description

Position Overview The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) provides comprehensive psychiatric care to adolescent, adult, and geriatric clients within an outpatient setting. This includes assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of psychiatric and behavioral health conditions. The PMHNP utilizes evidence-based pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions and delivers patient and family education. Services are rendered under a Collaborative Practice Agreement and the supervision of a psychiatrist. The PMHNP works collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams, supports clinical staff through consultation and supervision, and participates in ongoing professional development, quality improvement, and organizational initiatives. Essential Functions Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and develop individualized treatment plans. Diagnose and treat emotional disorders and psychiatric conditions within scope of licensure and experience. Prescribe medications and therapeutic interventions based on evidence-based guidelines. Provide education to patients and families on mental health conditions, medications, and treatment plans. Collaborate with physicians, therapists, case managers, and community resources to support holistic care. Participate in psychiatric staffing and consultative support for clinical staff, including emergency evaluations. Participates in the Behavioral Health Council Meetings Maintain accurate and timely electronic documentation and adhere to productivity standards as set forth by the organization. Maintain all credentialing and privileging requirements. Demonstrate ongoing professional growth through continuing education and compliance with certification requirements. Adhere to all confidentiality, HIPAA, and ethical guidelines for clinical practice. Other duties as assigned. Work-Related Experience Minimum 1-2 years of experience in a psychiatric or behavioral health setting required Experience working with diverse populations, including those with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders required. Experience in outpatient psychiatric care or integrated behavioral health settings. Familiarity with trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, and chronic psychiatric condition management. Experience with collaborative care models and interdisciplinary team-based approaches.
Physical Demands and Work Environment Mental:
Strong decision-making and clinical judgment in high-pressure or crisis situations. Ability to maintain emotional resilience when managing patients with complex or acute psychiatric conditions. Ability to remain calm, compassionate, and professional in challenging situations. Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
Physical:
Frequent standing, walking, and occasional lifting of patients or equipment (up to 25 lbs). Ability to perform repetitive motions, including typing for EHR documentation. Frequent standing, walking, and reaching to provide patient care. Dexterity to perform hands-on procedures such as injections and diagnostic testing. Prolonged sitting at a desk with frequent computer use.
Working Conditions:
Clinical environment with exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous materials, and emotionally challenging patient cases.
Education, Certification, and Licensure Education:
Master's degree from an accredited Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) program.
Certification:
Certification as a PMHNP by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).
Licensure:
Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Indiana, Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) licensure in the State of Indiana with prescriptive authority, and DEA license (or eligibility) for prescribing controlled substances. Skills Ability to establish rapport and build therapeutic relationships with clients. Proficient in psychiatric diagnostic criteria, treatment planning, and evidence-based practices. Strong time management and clinical documentation skills. Culturally competent care delivery and ability to serve diverse populations. Effective collaboration and communication with multidisciplinary teams. Commitment to ethical practice, professional development, and continuous quality improvement.
Pay Range:
$100,000 per year
