Position Overview The University of Maryland Medical Center is seeking an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join our Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) team. This position is based at our flagship academic medical center and provides care to critically ill patients in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment. This is a night-shift position that includes rotating weekends and holidays. Under the supervision of the attending physician, the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of critically ill patients. The APP works collaboratively with physicians, nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and other members of the healthcare team to ensure safe, evidence-based, and patient-centered care. Key Responsibilities Clinical Practice Perform comprehensive patient assessments, histories, and physical examinations. Develop differential diagnoses and formulate evidence-based treatment plans. Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic studies and laboratory results. Prescribe medications and therapeutic interventions in accordance with scope of practice and organizational policies. Perform invasive bedside procedures appropriate to training and credentialing. Participate in daily multidisciplinary rounds and coordinate care plans. Collaborate with physicians regarding admissions, transfers, and discharge planning. Communicate effectively with patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and goals of care. Coordinate specialty consultations and community resources as needed. Facilitate patient flow and support safe transitions of care. Leadership and Quality Improvement Participate in quality improvement initiatives focused on patient outcomes, safety, and operational efficiency. Support the development and implementation of evidence-based clinical pathways and best practices. Participate in peer review, chart audits, and performance improvement activities. Assist in achieving departmental goals related to quality, patient satisfaction, length of stay, and cost-effective care. Support accreditation and regulatory readiness activities. Education and Professional Development Serve as a clinical resource for nursing staff, residents, fellows, students, and other healthcare professionals. Participate in educational activities, including orientation, mentorship, and precepting. Contribute to departmental education programs, journal clubs, and grand rounds. Maintain professional competency through continuing education and specialty certification. Research and Scholarship Participate in clinical research and evidence-based practice initiatives. Support scholarly activities, presentations, and publications. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to advance clinical innovation and improve patient outcomes. Qualifications Education Master's or Doctoral degree from an accredited Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program. Licensure and Certification Nurse Practitioners Current Maryland licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN). National certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. Physician Assistants Current Maryland licensure as a Physician Assistant. NCCPA certification. Additional Requirements DEA and CDS eligibility. Current BLS and ACLS certifications. Compliance with all organizational credentialing and privileging requirements. Experience Minimum of one year of critical care, acute care, emergency medicine, hospital medicine, or related clinical experience preferred. Demonstrated commitment to professional development through education, research, quality improvement, certification, or professional organization involvement. Excellent clinical judgment, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary critical care environment. Working Conditions Full-time night-shift schedule with rotating weekends and holidays. Participation in on-call coverage may be required. Frequent exposure to critically ill patients and infectious diseases. Compliance with standard and transmission-based precautions is required. Patient Safety Demonstrates a commitment to patient safety and quality care. Identifies, reports, and addresses patient safety concerns. Maintains compliance with organizational policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
