The Prince George's County Department of Health is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Family Nurse Practitioner (Nurse Practitioner I/II), grade A23/A25 position, in the Family Health Services/Reproductive Health Clinical Care Division . About the Position This is entry level specialized professional community health nursing work providing direct primary care, comprehensive nursing, therapeutic and preventive health care services in an expanded nurse role as a nurse practitioner to individuals, families and groups. Work is done in accordance with the
Maryland Nurse Practice Act Code of Maryland Regulations:
Practice of the Nurse Practitioner. The Nurse Practitioner position is a registered nurse (R.N.) who has advanced education and clinical training in a health care specialty area. Such specialty areas include, but are not limited to: Well Woman, Reproductive Health, PrEP, STI and HIV care and treatment, Adult Health, and Women's/Ob Gyn Health (Mid wife). Selected individuals in this class are responsible for providing care to clients by assessing health status, performing physical examinations, providing treatment, prescribing medications, recommending follow-up care and making referrals to appropriate health professionals. In addition, the incumbent provides health teaching, counseling and guidance to patients and their families. Work is performed under the direction of a higher-level nurse who provides administrative and professional nursing supervision and under the direction of a physician with whom a joint formal written agreement has been signed. Work requires making decisions concerning interpretation of considerable data such as physical/psychiatric examinations and laboratory reports. The employee's work is reviewed through records, reports, conferences and observation. Upon the satisfactory completion of a one (1) year probationary period, entry-level incumbents may be non-competitively promoted to the Nurse Practitioner II full performance level at Management's discretion. About the Agency The Prince George's County Health Department's (PGCHD) vision is that all Prince Georgians are their healthiest at every age and every stage. The PGCHD works to protect and support the public's health through numerous services that range from restaurant inspections and disease tracking to care coordination and health promotion. The department is composed of four divisions: Behavioral Health Services, Environmental Health and Disease Control, Family Health Services, and Health and Wellness, supported by the Office of Administration, Office of Human Resources and the Office of the Health Officer. The mandate of the department has been, and will remain, broad. This plan emphasizes improving core functions and operations, including protecting the public from health threats, implementing strategies to support healthy living, and maintaining a focus on vulnerable populations, while developing efficient internal processes to support these activities. Examples of Work Obtains a comprehensive health history from patient or family, records findings and makes critical evaluation of patient health status. Performs a detailed examination and assessment on patients and discriminates between normal and abnormal findings. Evaluates and reviews findings with physician and decides which patients need additional care either within or outside the scope of Health Department services. Identifies and manages acute and chronic illness in accordance with established medical protocols. Provides emergency care or crisis intervention in the absence of the physician. Provides follow up care of clients who have been diagnosed and treated by the physician and referred to the nurse practitioner. Maintains current clinical and nursing records. Serves as a consultant to other health care providers. Formulates and implements plan of care which may involve various forms of treatment and prescribed medications; recommends follow up care and makes referrals as needed. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Candidates must meet all minimum qualifications listed below to be eligible for additional consideration: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited college or university, or completion of a nursing program determined by the Maryland State Board of Nursing to be equivalent to a program accredited by the National League for Nursing. OR Master's Degree in Public Health, Community Health Nursing or other appropriate nursing specialties.
All candidates must also have:
Current Registered Nurse (RN) license and completion of a Nurse Practitioner Program withcertification as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) in Maryland issued by the Maryland State Board of Nursing. Possession of a valid driver's license. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for the Master's Degree, but not for the successful completion of a Nurse Practitioner Program or any required licenses. Preferred Qualifications Experience with Epic Electronic Medical Records (EMR).

The Prince George's County benefits plan year is from January 1 to December 31. A spouse (to include a same sex spouse) can be added to the health benefit plans.
