Job Description

New Alternatives for Children, Inc. (NAC) is an award-winning not-for-profit agency in Midtown Manhattan dedicated to serving children and families with medical complexities, chronic illnesses, and disabilities throughout the five boroughs. To assist in achieving this mission, NAC is currently seeking a Full-time Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner to join its Mental Health Department. New Alternatives for Children (NAC)'s mental health department is comprised of a psychiatrist, 4 psychiatric nurse practitioners, 4 full-time psychologists, 2 psychology post-docs and several psychotherapists from different disciplines: social work, mental health counseling, creative arts. The program acts as a placement site for a variety of trainees across disciplines, including psychiatric nurse practitioner student interns. The department is also accredited by the American Psychology Association. NAC offers Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners the tools needed to feel successful in treating a wide variety of patients, while maintaining and valuing a manageable workload that allows time for administrative work, supervision, interdisciplinary/collaborative teamwork, and continuing education, all of which contribute to optimal patient care and outcomes. Psychiatric evaluations are scheduled in 90-minute increments (maximum 1 new evaluation per day) and medication management appointments are scheduled in 30-minute increments. We offer close collaboration with the psychiatrist and other nurse practitioners, including weekly individual and biweekly group supervision.

Mental Health Outpatient Clinic Job Duties:
Treat a full range of mental health conditions in children, adolescents and adults including (but not limited to) ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression, trauma-related disorders, bipolar disorder, psychosis, adjustment disorders, and other cognitive/neurodevelopmental difficulties Psychiatric evaluations/ assessments, including psychiatric diagnosis in tandem with DSM-5 Make treatment recommendations, assess the mental health treatment received by clients in their communities, and assist with appropriate referrals when indicated Psychiatric Medication Management Gather medical history and monitor physical health as it relates to psychiatric care, including vital signs/ labs Work in multi-disciplinary team model; attend regularly scheduled interdisciplinary case conferences including consultation meetings with therapists, social work and medical staff regarding clinical case issues Provide supervision/ preceptorship to PMHNP students (dependent on experience and interest/availability) Timely completion of documentation including progress notes, evaluations/assessments, and forms related to patient care, including those requested for continuation of other community-based services Timely response to emails and phone outreach from other NAC staff or community providers Consult with community mental health / medical providers as clinically indicated Completion of initial and subsequent (every 6 months) patient treatment plans Crisis intervention/management. Provide emergency psychiatric consultations regarding NAC clients as needed Provide in-service training and clinical education to therapists, social work and medical staff on topics related to psychiatric diagnosis and treatment
Essential Qualifications:
Must possess Registered Nurse with a Master's degree from an accredited college or university and specialty training in Psychiatry Board certified as Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Candidates must be clinically competent in psychiatry and must possess sufficient experience to independently perform the duties of a
Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Preferred Qualifications:
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage a variety of clinical duties as part of a multidisciplinary team Preferred two years of post-graduation clinical experience in culturally competent, evidence-based clinical practice with children, adults, and families Experience with social welfare population preferred.
