Job Description

The Correctional Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing comprehensive healthcare services to inmates housed at the Wagoner County Detention Center. The NP delivers high-quality medical care in a secure correctional environment, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, chronic disease management, emergency response, and health education. This position works collaboratively with detention staff, healthcare personnel, mental health providers, and community healthcare resources to ensure inmates receive timely and appropriate medical care while maintaining facility safety and security. The primary care provider for medical services inside the jail Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesClinical Care Conduct intake medical screenings and comprehensive health assessments for newly admitted inmates. Diagnose and treat acute and chronic medical conditions within the scope of practice. Prescribe medications, treatments, and therapies in accordance with Oklahoma state laws and facility protocols. Order, interpret, and evaluate laboratory tests, diagnostic studies, and other medical assessments. Manage chronic illnesses including diabetes, hypertension, asthma, cardiovascular disease, and infectious diseases. Provide routine sick-call services and follow-up care. Respond to medical emergencies and coordinate emergency medical services when necessary. Monitor and address communicable disease concerns and infection control practices. Mental Health and Substance Use Support Identify inmates requiring mental health evaluations and referrals. Assist in the management and monitoring of medication-assisted treatment (MAT) programs when applicable. Evaluate and monitor inmates experiencing withdrawal symptoms from alcohol or substance use. Collaborate with mental health professionals regarding treatment planning and continuity of care. Documentation and Compliance Maintain accurate and timely electronic and paper medical records. Ensure compliance with Oklahoma Department of Health standards, correctional healthcare guidelines, and facility policies. Participate in quality improvement initiatives, audits, and accreditation activities. Prepare reports and documentation as required by administration and regulatory agencies. Collaboration and Communication Work closely with detention officers, supervisors, healthcare staff, and outside medical providers. Coordinate specialty referrals, hospital transfers, and discharge planning. Provide education and training to detention staff regarding medical emergencies, infection prevention, and inmate healthcare concerns. Attend staff meetings and participate in multidisciplinary case reviews. Safety and Security Adhere to all Wagoner County Detention Center safety and security procedures. Maintain professional boundaries and ethical standards when interacting with inmates. Report incidents, injuries, and security concerns according to facility policy. Participate in emergency preparedness and response planning.
