This 8 week summer internship is designed for medical students in their 3rd or 4th year and dual degree trainees (MD/MPH, MD/MBA, MPH/MBA) who are interested in healthcare leadership, population medical management, and value based care. This summer internship offers medical students and dual degree trainees the opportunity to gain hands on exposure to primary care strategy and value based care transformation within a population focused healthcare environment. The internship is non patient facing and designed to provide insight into how clinical and executive leaders partner with primary care organizations to improve quality, outcomes, and value at scale. The intern will support initiatives focused on Primary Care Strategy, including how the organization collaborates with primary care groups and medical homes to align members with high quality, well supported, value aligned primary care providers. In addition, the intern will gain exposure to Value Based Care (VBC) strategy, participating in market level discussions and deep dives into evolving care models and model performance considerations. Through collaboration with physician leaders, strategy teams, and population health partners, the intern will develop an understanding of how next generation VBC models are designed, implemented, and optimized across diverse markets. This experience is intended for trainees interested in primary care leadership, population health, healthcare strategy, and value based care, and provides foundational exposure to the system level decision making that shapes modern healthcare delivery. Primary Responsibilities:
Support Primary Care Strategy initiatives focused on how the organization partners with primary care groups, medical homes, and physician organizations to improve member alignment with high quality, well supported, value aligned PCPs Assist with analysis and documentation of primary care partnership models, including how medical homes are structured, supported, and measured within population focused care Participate in Value Based Care (VBC) strategy discussions, including market level meetings and deep dives into specific VBC models and model performance issues Observe and support market level strategy sessions to understand how VBC models are implemented, evaluated, and refined across different geographies Help synthesize insights from model reviews, market discussions, and strategy meetings into summary materials for clinical and operational leadership Collaborate with physician leaders, population health teams, and strategy partners to understand how primary care and VBC strategies drive quality, cost, and outcomes Assist with preparation of presentations, briefing materials, and written summaries related to primary care strategy and value based care initiatives By the end of the internship, the intern will: Understand how primary care strategy supports population health by aligning members with high performing primary care practices and medical homes Gain exposure to how health systems and payers partner with primary care organizations to support quality, access, and sustainability Learn the fundamentals of Value Based Care models, including common structures, incentives, and performance considerations Observe how market level variation influences VBC model design, implementation, and ongoing optimization Develop insight into how clinical leadership evaluates and advances next generation VBC strategies Build foundational skills in healthcare strategy, systems thinking, and executive level communication applicable to future clinical leadership roles You'll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.Required Qualifications:
Current enrollment in an accredited medical school or dual degree graduate program, including: MD (medical student)MD/MPH MD/MBA MPH/MBA
Demonstrated interest in primary care, population health, healthcare strategy, or value based care Proven ability to engage with strategic, analytical, and discussion based work in a non patient facing environment Proven solid written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to summarize complex concepts clearly Proven ability to work independently while collaborating with clinical, operational, and strategy leaders Availability to commit to a full time summer internshipPreferred Qualifications:
Proven medical students in clinical training years or graduate students in advanced stages of study Proven interest in careers involving primary care leadership, population health, value based care, or health system strategy Proven curiosity about payment models, care delivery redesign, and healthcare system transformation Proven exposure to population health, health policy, healthcare administration, quality improvement, or analytics through coursework, research, or professional experience Proven comfort participating in market meetings, strategic discussions, and leadership level presentations- All employees working remotely will be required to adhere to UnitedHealth Group's Telecommuter Policy Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc.
