Job Description
Position Purpose The primary purpose of this job position is to provide direct care and assistance to residents with their activities of daily living under the supervision and direction of a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse and in accordance with federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations to ensure that the highest quality of resident care is maintained at all times. The CNA assumes the authority, responsibility and accountability necessary to understand and carry out his or her assigned duties within the CNA scope of practice. Job Requirements 1. Must have an active certified nursing assistant license in good standing with no restrictions and with privileges to work in the state of residency/employment; If not currently licensed at the time of hire, must be enrolled in an approved certified nursing assistant course and become licensed within 120 days of hire. It is the responsibility of the employee to maintain active certifications throughout their time of employment; 2. Previous CNA experience is preferred, with some of that experience in a long-term care facility; 3. Must provide all necessary documentation in accordance with the company's new hire process to evidence eligibility for employment, including passing a criminal background check, obtaining a Food Handler's permit, obtaining Basic Life Support certification for healthcare providers, etc. It is the responsibility of the employee to maintain active certifications throughout their time of employment; 4. Must complete new hire orientation as required by company policy and participate in continuing education such as in-services, training, etc.; 5. Must possess excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate clearly and work well with others; 6. Must possess excellent organizational, critical thinking, decision making and problem solving skills; 7. Must possess the ability to communicate proficiently in English, both orally and in writing; 8. Must be proficient in the use of technology, including and especially the use of computers; 9. Must be willing to follow all federal, state and local laws and regulations as well as company policies and procedures and abide by the employee handbook, including but not limited to dress and grooming standards, time and attendance standards, drug and alcohol policy, respect and courtesy towards others, etc.; 10. Must have flexibility and availability to work outside of standard business hours, including on-call shifts, night shifts, weekends and holidays; 11. Must participate in and respond professionally to surveys and inspections conducted by government agencies; 12. Must be able to perform physical tasks associated with the standard work and essential functions of a CNA, including standing or sitting for extended periods, lifting/carrying in excess of 30 pounds, or be able to be reasonably accommodated for any limitations; 13. Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress inherent to the position, including working daily with residents in the geriatric, mentally ill, dementia, and disabled populations; 14. Must be able to perform assigned tasks with a minimum of supervision and oversight and develop awareness for and a willingness to perform other tasks, as needed, without constant supervision; 15. Must help foster and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, cheerfulness, enthusiasm and compassion, giving residents the quality of service you would want to receive. Summary of Principal Accountabilities Assist residents as needed with activities of daily living including, but not limited to: bathing, personal hygiene, oral hygiene, dressing, eating, toileting, transferring, ambulation/locomotion. Take or send soiled linen and clothing to the laundry in properly secured bags as indicated throughout the shift. Linens soiled with bodily waste products must be rinsed thoroughly in the hopper room before being sent to the laundry. Change the resident's bed linens on shower days and as needed when bed linens become soiled. Take out trash in properly secured bags as indicated throughout the shift and put a new liner in garbage cans. Help keep the resident rooms clean and orderly. Mop up spills and clean messes made by residents as needed or notify housekeeping for larger spills or messes. Clean resident assistive devices, such as walker, wheelchairs or canes, according to the facility's cleaning schedule. Complete routine rounds on each shift and assist each resident as needed, ensuring residents are safe and accounted for, clean and comfortable. Provide care to residents in a person-centered manner, taking into consideration each resident's rights, goals and preferences for care and accommodating the resident's needs to the maximum extent possible and reasonable. This includes becoming familiar with each resident's care plan in his or her medical record. Safeguard and use appropriately all resident belongings and assistive devices/adaptive equipment, such as hearing aides, glasses, dentures, mobility devices, etc. Escort residents to scheduled activities or meals according to their care plan goals and preferences. Ensure residents are provided with ice water in clean mugs each shift as long as this does not conflict with the resident's physician orders. Perform restorative nursing tasks as scheduled for each resident. Assist with the admission/readmission of residents to the facility, including welcoming the resident, obtaining initial vital signs, orienting the resident to the facility, helping the resident unpack and complete an inventory form, label clothing as the resident permits, etc. Assist with the discharge of residents from the facility, including obtaining a final set of vital signs, assisting the resident to pack as needed, assisting the resident to their vehicle as needed. Perform post mortem care on residents who have passed away in preparation for discharge to the mortuary. Communicate with the licensed practical nurse or registered nurse throughout the shift regarding resident conditions that are noteworthy. This includes a change in the resident's medical, cognitive or physical condition from their baseline, alteration in bowel/bladder function, new skin conditions, accidents/incidents, changes in behavior, etc. Accurately document all care provided for assigned residents during the shift in the resident's medical record. Maintain privacy and confidentiality of resident information, both orally and in writing. Help maintain cleanliness of work areas, break areas, linen closets, supply closets, etc. Notify the appropriate manager when supplies need to be re-ordered through the designated method of communication. Perform other related duties as may become necessary or as directed by supervisor(s).
