Immediately Job Description Primary Purpose:
Assist school nurse by assuming routine record-keeping activities, providing minor first aid care, and conducting health screening at campus level. Work under the guidance and direction of a registered nurse.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education/Certification High School diploma or GED (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency) Certified Nurse Aide with the Texas Department of Health preferred; medical assistant considered CPR/AED certified Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50) paid by employee.
Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills Ability to use personal computer and software to do word processing and data entry Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written) Ability to work with children Knowledge of general office equipment
Experience:
One (1) year experience in health-related position, including contact with school-age children
Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Professionalism The Educators' Code of Ethics is set forth in Texas Administrative Code to provide rules for standard practices and ethical conduct toward students, professional colleagues, school officials, parents, and members of the community. Rule §247.1 Purpose and Scope; Definitions Rule §247.2 Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators Organization Management The certified nurse assistant manages administrative, fiscal, and facilities functions responsibly through activities such as the following: Carry out first aid and emergency procedures for ill and injured students according to policy and as directed by RN. Administer medication to students according to board policy and district procedures; maintain accurate record of medications administered. Assist with screening activities including vision, hearing, and spinal and type II diabetes screening as directed by Health Services Director. Assist students with disabilities as necessary. Provide certain prescribed medical treatments after being trained and evaluated by the RN in accordance with the Nursing Practice Act. Serve as an emergency substitute to all DVISD campuses; provide health services coverage when needed. Use Universal Precautions Procedures when cleaning all body spills and providing wound care. Keep nurse's office clean and sanitary. Data Management The substitute assists with fostering analytical and collaborative environment activities such as the following: Enter information on student health records. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required, including accurate, updated health records on all students. Prepare correspondence, reports, and records using personal computer. Maintain clinic supply inventory and request supplies as needed. Qualities of an Effective Substitute The substitute exhibits qualities such as the following: Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of State Health Services rules, State Board of Education rules, and board policy in health services area. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations. Demonstrate behavior that is ethical and responsible. Maintain CPR/AED, and vision, hearing, type II diabetes and scoliosis screening certifications. Maintain confidentiality. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately. Perform any other duties as assigned by the administration.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
None Equipment:
Thermometer, blood pressure cuff, otoscope, sphygmomanometer, health screening equipment, basic clinic equipment, as well as student personal medical equipment, personal computer, copier, fax, telephone, and other equipment applicant to position.
Working Conditions:
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors Maintain emotional control under stress. Work with frequent interruptions. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing.
Occasional:
Lifting and carrying 15-44 pounds frequently, 25-40 pounds occasionally, more than 45 pounds infrequently with assistance; Pushing /Pulling 15-44 pounds sporadically.
Frequent exposure to:
temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination vibration.
Occasional exposure to:
biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, etc.), work outside, work around moving objects or vehicles, work on uneven surfaces. May require lifting, feeding, diapering, and caring of severely handicapped students.
