Full-time, with evening and weekend availability as needed About the Opportunity John Bertram House of Salem is seeking an experienced, hands-on Executive Director to lead our 25-unit nonprofit assisted living community serving seniors and families on Boston's North Shore. This is a highly visible leadership role for an operator who understands the importance of resident-centered care, strong family communication, staff accountability, regulatory compliance, and occupancy growth. The Executive Director is responsible for the overall leadership, daily operations, financial performance, community reputation, and resident experience of the community. As the leader of a small assisted living community, the Executive Director must be comfortable being both strategic and hands-on. This individual will work directly with residents, families, staff, referral partners, vendors, and community organizations to ensure the community remains warm, safe, compliant, financially stable, and mission-driven. Key Responsibilities Leadership & Team Management Lead, support, and hold accountable a dedicated team across resident care, dining, activities, housekeeping, maintenance, and administration. Build a positive, respectful, and service-oriented culture focused on dignity, compassion, safety, and quality of life. Oversee hiring, onboarding, staff training, performance management, employee relations, and team communication. Provide clear expectations, coaching, and follow-up to ensure strong daily operations and resident service. Resident & Family Experience Ensure resident well-being, dignity, independence, and satisfaction remain central to all decisions. Maintain proactive communication with families and responsible parties. Respond promptly and professionally to resident and family questions, concerns, and service needs. Support a warm, homelike environment where residents feel known, respected, and cared for. Lead or support resident meetings, family communication, service discussions, and issue resolution. Operations & Compliance Oversee day-to-day operations of the 25-unit assisted living community. Maintain a clean, safe, welcoming, and well-functioning environment. Ensure compliance with Massachusetts assisted living regulations and applicable organizational standards. Monitor resident records, service plans, incident reports, documentation, safety practices, emergency preparedness, and quality assurance efforts. Work closely with care leadership and staff to ensure resident needs are identified, communicated, and addressed appropriately. Coordinate with vendors, providers, and community partners to support smooth operations. Sales, Marketing & Occupancy Growth Own and actively support the sales, marketing, referral, and admissions process. Build relationships with local referral sources, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, physicians, elder law professionals, senior service organizations, houses of worship, and community partners. Lead or support tours, inquiry follow-up, admissions conversations, and move-in coordination. Track inquiries, tours, move-ins, lost leads, and outreach activity. Understand the local senior living market, competitors, pricing, and referral trends. Work to maintain strong occupancy, appropriate revenue, and a positive reputation in Salem and the surrounding North Shore community. Financial Management Manage the community's budget, revenue, labor, expenses, collections, and operating performance. Monitor census, room rate, staffing levels, and key operating costs. Review financial results and implement action plans when needed. Balance financial stewardship with mission alignment, service quality, compliance, and resident experience. Qualifications Bachelor's degree required. Prior experience as an Executive Director, Administrator, General Manager, or senior living operations leader required. Assisted living management experience strongly preferred. Experience managing a small assisted living community or similar senior care setting preferred. Sales, marketing, admissions, or business development experience preferred. Experience with nonprofit operations, mission-driven service delivery, board relations, or charitable/community-based organizations preferred. Knowledge of Massachusetts assisted living regulations preferred. Demonstrated ability to manage staff, operations, resident satisfaction, family communication, compliance, expenses, and occupancy. Strong leadership, communication, judgment, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Ability to build trust with residents, families, staff, referral sources, and community partners. Comfort working in a small, relationship-driven assisted living setting. Passion for serving seniors and supporting families. Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.
