Basic Statement of Responsibilities The teaching and learning process is the primary focus of faculty. As such, Allegany College of Maryland (ACM) cultivates a climate that enhances teaching and learning and supports all activities that foster a learning centered college. At ACM, our vision of teaching excellence is one that: motivates students to develop pride, passion, and personal responsibility in their education; demonstrates content expertise; creates academic processes and experiences that positively impact student learning; engages students in meaningful learning; and that connects students, faculty and staff in an academic community that fosters lifelong learning and student success. The primary responsibility of faculty is to effectively teach courses within their discipline area(s). An effective professional educator will plan, organize, teach, assess, advise, remediate, and provide timely feedback to promote and guide student learning in alignment with Allegany College of Maryland (ACM) learning- college values. Additionally, faculty will meet their obligations to their department/division and will be empowered to choose opportunities relevant to their professional development and service to the institution and/or community. In the All-College Assembly Constitution and Bylaws, all faculty are members of the All-College Assembly, which is where you, as an internal stakeholder, can democratically participate in shared governance.
Essential Functions Teaching & Learning:
Knowledge and understanding of learning-centered values with the ability to develop and implement diverse teaching and learning strategies that optimize the learning of all students and promote both acquisition and applications of knowledge and understanding (Learning-Centered Teaching Strategies). Prepare and deliver instruction to students in assigned modalities (classroom, hybrid, online, etc.). Prepare instructional materials. Provide feedback on students' progress, including evaluation of student mastery of course and program outcomes. Use consistent, timely, formative, and summative assessment measures to enhance learning (Assessment). Technological competence -knowledge of, ability to develop, and commitment to using emerging technologies appropriate to the discipline. Use alternative instructional methods, such as online delivery, hybrid course options, and flexible learning modalities. Continuously examine the effectiveness of teaching and assessment methodologies in terms of student learning by engaging in the scholarship of teaching and learning (Scholarship of Teaching and Learning). Design learning opportunities that acknowledge, draw upon, and are enriched by all students in the learning environment.
Prepare and submit required documentation:
student attendance checks, midterm/final course grades, and other information as requested or required by the college. Required to use the college's LMS (Learning Management Systems) to post course syllabi, record attendance, and other information as requested or required by the college. Treat students with respect and be responsive to their needs. Conduct assigned classes in accordance with the catalog, course descriptions, student learning outcomes, and program goals.
Division/Department Responsibilities:
Participate in department/division meetings and other activities are encouraged but not required. Assist in departmental assessment reporting. Familiar with and maintains behavior and actions consistent with college policies. Collaborate and cooperate in the fulfillment of the goals of the department/division and the College in order to contribute as a valued member of the department/division. Maintain timely communication with Program Director or Division Chair.
Academic Advising:
Informally mentor students and provide support in their course and curriculum planning, ensuring student success and completion. Work in collaboration with Admissions and Registration, the Advising Center, Financial Aid and other college services to ensure student planning, success, and completion. Examples of collaboration include student compliance plans, academic alerts, student services referrals, etc. Fulfill responsibilities outlined in the Advising Syllabus .
Professional Development:
A part-time faculty member's professional development is important to ACM. Therefore, part-time faculty members are encouraged to take advantage of internal professional development opportunities at
ACM:
e.g., Faculty Development workshops, membership in Teaching and Learning Community (TLC), Learning College Teaching and Learning Community (LC-TLC), Annual Professional Development Day, etc. Part-time faculty members are encouraged to work with their Program Director or Division Chair to identify the appropriate opportunities for them. Professional commitment to stay current and continually improve knowledge and understanding of the discipline. Meet required internal professional development trainings that are essential for accreditation, compliance, or serve to advance learning-centered principles.
Faculty Workload and Load Assignment:
Meeting the essential duties and responsibilities of a part-time teaching appointment at Allegany College of Maryland requires that the faculty member will: Accept responsibilities and obligations as a professional educator. The primary duty of faculty is the instruction of assigned classes. This duty must take precedence over all other activities. Work off-schedule hours, when necessary, for the benefit of their students or department: e.g., evening and/or weekend hours instructing classes or grading assignments. Be accessible to students in a variety of days, times, and modalities consistent with student needs. Perform other reasonable duties as assigned by supervisor. Faculty members are also obligated to abide by, and thus support, all college policies, and procedures. Faculty must be committed to the learning centered philosophy, as well as the strategic priorities of the college as identified through the Strategic Plan and the Educational Master Plan.
Education, Experience, and Specialized Skills Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required and 2 years of recent nursing practice. Current registration or eligibility for registration as a Registered Nurse in Maryland and Pennsylvania. Current certification in health care provider CPR is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
There are two open positions for the Part-Time Nursing Clinical Instructor. For one of these positions, preference will be given to applicants with professional experience in the following areas: pediatrics, obstetrics, and/or mental health Master's Degree in Nursing Ability to teach in a variety of clinical settings, Experience in teaching and clinical supervision of students in an accredited nursing program Prior use of online course management systems (ex- Blackboard, Brightspace, etc.) • Skill in utilizing technology in teaching in the classroom and with simulation based education Experience in curriculum development Allegany College of Maryland is committed to providing equal employment opportunity to its faculty, staff, and job applicants through non-discrimination in its employment practices including, but not necessarily limited to, recruitment, hiring, training, promotional opportunities, compensation, discipline, and termination. Worker's Compensation:
An employee in any type of position at the college is covered by worker's compensation insurance when he or she is involved in a work-related accident. Worker's compensation insurance covers medical care, rehabilitation and lost wages for employees or death benefits for the employee's dependents, according to the specific terms of the insurance policy
Tuition Waiver:
(Employees contracted for a minimum of 750 hours for the current fiscal year and who has accumulated at least 750 hours via previous service are eligible for tuition waivers for credit courses offered by ACM.)
Professional Development Opportunities:
All employees are welcome to participate in College sponsored professional development activities. Sick and Safe Leave - Part-time employees who will regularly work 12 or more hours per week will earn paid sick and safe leave. Eligible part-time employees will earn 1 hour of sick and safe leave for every 30 hours that they work. Part-time employees may accrue up to 40 hours of sick and safe leave in a fiscal year, carryover a balance of 40 hours per year; sick and safe leave hours are limited to earning and accruing up to 64 hours per year. Holidays - Part-time employees may enjoy the 17 official college holidays, however they will not be compensated for these days.
Bereavement Leave:
Eligible part-time employees are provided paid leave of up to three normally scheduled work days for the death of an immediate family member. Military - part-time employees who are in the uniformed services can take accrued annual, or leave without pay, to serve in the uniformed services. Family and Medical Leave - FMLA entitles eligible employees to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave in a rolling 12-month period measured backward from the date an employee uses any FMLA leave for specified family and medical reasons. Flexible Spending Accounts - Employees can obtain a medical reimbursement account and/or a dependent care assistance account effective the first of the month following the employee's date of hire. Employees do not need to enroll in the college's medical or dental plan to be eligible for flexible spending accounts. Supplemental Retirement Accounts - All employees who normally work 20 hours or more per week can make tax-deferred supplemental retirement contributions to any of the supplemental retirement funds offered by the college. Allegany County Federal Credit Union:
Employees of ACM are eligible to join the Allegany County Teachers Federal Credit Union. The credit union can be reached at 301-729-8015. College Facility Usage - Allegany College of Maryland's facilities include, the Fitness Center, which includes treadmills, bikes, ellipticals, rowing machines, hand weights, big weights, nautilus equipment, gymnasium, and outside tracks, which include the mile track and the quarter mile track. Allegany College of Maryland's students and staff have full access to these facilities. The fitness centers hours of operation vary. Allegany College of Maryland Dining Services are provided by Metz Culinary Management. Located in the College Center, our restaurant atmosphere with a special flare of home offers a variety of tastes for all guests. Quality, nutritious menus are available. Metz Cafe Employee Assistance Program (EAP) - Employees and their household members can access up to eight (8) free, confidential sessions at UPMC-Western Maryland or Bedford-Somerset DBHS to help with family, personal or professional problems: or they may visit the ACM onsite counselor with unlimited sessions. Nurse Managed Wellness Clinic (NMWC) - The NMWC supports health and wellness through education with the goal that all individuals become informed self-directed consumers of health care.
