The Camp Health Director/Nurse leads day camp health services, including routine care, medication administration oversight, and emergency response. This role maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting safe conditions in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures and all applicable regulations, licensing standards, and risk management practices.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Models the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility with campers, families, and staff. Leads day camp health services in accordance with applicable licensing standards, standing orders, YMCA policies, state and local laws, YMCA of the USA risk management recommendations, and child abuse prevention practices to promote a safe, healthy, and supportive camp environment. Responds quickly and effectively to accidents, incidents, and health concerns; provides appropriate first aid care and determines next steps (family notification, EMS activation, referral for evaluation, etc.). Maintains accurate health documentation including daily health logs, medication administration logs, incident/accident reports, and required communications in a timely manner. Organizes and maintains camper and staff health records to ensure completeness, confidentiality, and regulatory compliance; communicates missing/incomplete documentation to the registrar and supports follow-up as needed. Oversees safe medication management practices, including secure storage, documentation, and staff training/coverage protocols in accordance with state regulations and camp procedures. Prepares and delivers staff training on health procedures, first aid response expectations, required documentation, and camp health protocols; provides ongoing coaching/support to seasonal staff as needed. Proactively communicates relevant health precautions, restrictions, allergies, or special care needs to appropriate camp leadership and staff, ensuring confidentiality while supporting safe participation. Sets up and maintains a clean, organized, and camp-ready health services area; ensures supplies are stocked, accessible, and stored per regulations. Orders and manages medical/first aid supplies and equipment; monitors inventory and notifies camp leadership in advance of additional needs to ensure uninterrupted coverage. Ensures field trips and off-site activities are supported with appropriate health documentation and supplies, including copies of required medical forms and medications when applicable. Attends required meetings and trainings and serves as a collaborative member of the camp leadership team to support overall camp quality and risk management. Must be 21 years of age or older. Current CPR for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid certifications required (or ability to obtain prior to start, as applicable). Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Registered Nurse (RN), or Licensed Physician strongly preferred. Minimum one (1) year of experience working with youth required; pediatric/child health experience preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of child development and ability to provide routine care and respond effectively in emergency situations. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, including ability to maintain confidential records, ensure compliance, and manage supplies. Knowledge of (or ability to learn and adhere to) Connecticut Department of Public Health regulations and other applicable requirements for day camp health services and medication administration. Must complete all YMCA new employee requirements, onboarding, and mandatory trainings. This position leads health services, medication administration, and emergency response at camp.
