Job Description
Job Summary/Overall Objectives Plans, directs, coordinates and evaluates the overall patient care provided in the different Perioperative Departments at Independence Health System. This includes the operating room, short stay, PACU and Central Sterile. They are responsible for the management of supplies, equipment and operational and capital budgets. Ensures routine competencies are completed and develop and implements on-going education specific to each department. Provides yearly performance evaluation and assists in setting goals for staff. Position oversees staff based in hospital environment and Laurel Surgery Center. Essential Job Responsibilities The position is responsible for leading the department and accountable for perioperative services. This position has direct supervisory responsibilities such as hiring, coaching/mentoring, skills development, recognition and rewards, staff productivity, performance management and succession planning. Equitably and consistently apply and practice policies and procedures for all staff. Develop and manage department budget at or below budget expectations and consistent with adjusted volume variations. Identify and implement revenue enhancement opportunities. Responsible for aiding in recruitment and retention efforts. Ensure the clinical practice is in accordance with the PA Nurse Practice Act, hospital policies, procedures and protocols and other professional standards of care; ensure the care is delivered in a continuous flow that produces desired patient outcomes. Hold staff accountable for complying with all aspects of the nursing process including, but not limited to, age specific needs and pain management. Ensure the care delivered is through an interdisciplinary effort that fosters a continuum of patient care that results in desired patient outcomes. Maintain open communication with the medical staff and serves as a liaison to answer questions and resolve problems/issues. Provide support for the staff to enter collaborative discussions to optimize patient outcomes. Provide clinical support as needed. Establish staffing patterns according to the department/unit scope of service and budgetary guidelines. Establish safety policies and procedures for the operation of equipment and service delivery practice in compliance with regulatory and organization guidelines . Monitor competency of staff in clinical practice and expected organizational outcomes. Promote compliance with practices that support infection control policies and a safe environment of care as identified by the organization, State, JCAHO, OSHA and other regulatory agencies. Promote medication safety through a non-punitive reporting system and performance improvement activities . Other duties as assigned. Competency and Experience [Knowledge, Skills and Abilities] Required Qualifications/Experience Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and five (5) years of Nursing experience. Two (2) to Four (4) years supervisory/management experience in nursing. Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, sound judgment, and knowledge of legal aspects and liability in nursing. Advanced knowledge of nursing practice and exceptional leadership abilities which include, but are not limited to, interpersonal relation skills, supervisory skills, budgeting skills, ability to maintain and improve service excellence and clinical quality. Strong ability to communicate complex and/or controversial topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience. Preferred Qualifications/Experience Master's Degree in Nursing, Health Administration, Business, Public Health, or Management preferred. License, Certification & Clearances Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Pennsylvania. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) approved curriculum of the American Heart Association (CPR and AED) program. Current ACLS (transfer and new hire within one year) Act 33 with renewal. Act 34 with renewal. Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal. Certification in specialty area preferred. Position Type/Expected Hours of Work Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need (rotate shifts, standby, on-call, etc.). Travel may be expected locally between System locations.
