POSITION OVERVIEW

Butterfly Grove School is a premier independent school dedicated exclusively to the education and empowerment of students on the autism spectrum. Under general supervision, the Occupational Therapist provides occupational therapy services to students exhibiting a range of learning-related challenges, including developmental delays, behavior disorders, perceptual-motor and visual-motor difficulties, gross and fine motor delays, and other associated disorders that interfere with a student's ability to benefit from their educational program. Therapy will be provided directly to students. Either in a push-in and/or pull-out model.

The Occupational Therapist will work as an integral member of the multidisciplinary team, applying both Educational models to design and deliver individualized services that support the whole child.

Specific duties include: 1. Direct Student Services & Intervention

• Deliver individual or small group therapy sessions addressing specific skill deficits, provided as pull-out sessions for focused work or push-in support within the classroom setting
• Develop fine motor skills through targeted activities to improve hand strength, dexterity, and coordination for tasks such as handwriting, using scissors, and managing buttons and zippers
• Improve visual-motor skills, including copying from the board, letter and word spacing, and completing puzzles and other perceptual tasks
• Develop and implement individualized sensory diets and regulation strategies for students with sensory processing challenges, supporting focus and readiness for learning
• Teach self-care and activities of daily living (ADLs) relevant to the school day, including managing lunch containers, organizing a backpack, and tying shoes
• Support in adapting the environment, equipment, materials, and activities to meet individual student needs, including recommending environmental modifications such as alternative seating, specialized writing tools, or designated calm spaces 2. Collaboration, Consultation & Classroom Support
• Regularly consult with the Director to develop, implement, and refine strategies and treatment programs
• Collaborate with classroom teachers to develop and embed practical strategies and accommodations into daily routines
• Support parent communication in coordination with the Director, as requested
• Actively participate in team meetings, contributing expertise on a student's functional performance in the school setting
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues, families, and community partners using tact, patience, and courtesy 3. Assessment, Documentation & Planning
• Perform screenings for all students as requested by the Director
• Administer standardized and non-standardized assessments to evaluate a student's functional abilities and performance in the school context, as requested by the Director
• Interpret assessment results, produce comprehensive written evaluation reports with practical recommendations for school and home, and present findings at team meetings
• Work with the Director to develop and monitor student goals
• Maintain confidential, accurate, and up-to-date records of all therapy sessions, consultations, and communications; provide records to the Director upon request
• Prepare and maintain accurate filing systems and comply with Educational Standards for documentation 4. Program Management & Compliance
• Schedule treatments, meetings, and other associated responsibilities
• Develop procedures and reporting forms to manage the program in compliance with Educational Standards
• Prepare reports, presentations, and materials; present information clearly in group settings
• With appropriate training, may be called upon to provide First Aid or CPR
• Observe legal and defensive driving practices

• Adhere to the Code of Ethics established by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA)
• Ensure licensure with the California Board of Occupational Therapy (CBOT) remains current and in good standing
• Act as a strong advocate for students' needs, promoting an inclusive and accessible learning environment
• Maintain confidentiality of student records and information in compliance with FERPA and applicable school policy
• Fulfill all legal obligations as a mandated reporter for suspected child abuse or neglect
• Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current on best practices and evidence-based interventions in school-based occupational therapy

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This role requires the physical ability to perform the essential functions of the position. Reasonable accommodations will be made for individuals with disabilities. Regular requirements include verbal communication and auditory engagement. The role also involves frequent use of hands to manipulate objects, tools, or controls, as well as occasional standing, walking, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. The employee must be able to push and maneuver students in wheelchairs and safely lift and support students during transfers, toileting, and related activities. Lifting and supporting students up to 75 lbs. is required, along with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing a minimum of 20 lbs. Additional requirements include sufficient dexterity to perform occupational therapy procedures, the ability to exchange information verbally in person or by phone, and visual abilities including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a standard office and/or classroom environment. The role includes working directly with children, and the employee must ensure that students are supervised at all times and engaged in safe and appropriate activities. The employee must be prepared to respond to accidents and emergencies as needed. Additional exposures may include adverse weather conditions, temperature extremes, blood-borne pathogens and communicable diseases, and interaction with disruptive or unruly individuals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Reasonable accommodations will be made for individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this role.

SCHEDULE

• Monday to Friday
• Approximately 204 days, aligned to the annual BGS school calendar
• Occasional off-hour work is required

Skills and Requirements Education/Experience:

• B.A. or B.S. from an accredited program, as well as experience and/or training that meets or exceeds the skills and abilities required by this role
• Hold and maintain certification with the American Occupational Therapy Certification Board (AOTCB) and California Board of Occupational Therapy (CBOT)
• Strong background in Sensory Integration therapy and its application in the treatment of Autism, Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), and associated regulatory disorders; SCSIPTS Certification preferred
• Prior experience in a Non-Public or Independent School serving neurodiverse students
• Deep, nuanced understanding of the autism spectrum, including sensory processing, communication differences, and behavioral support
• Strong understanding of Developmental Foundations and Neurodevelopmental implications as related to learning, behavior, and educational success
• Understanding of and ability to apply Educational versus Medical models in determining appropriate school-based therapy services
• Proficiency in report-writing methods and techniques

Minimum Requirements:

• Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
• Ability to pass a Department of Justice (DOJ) fingerprint clearance
• Within 60 days of hire, provision of TB (tuberculin) clearance, as mandated by the California Education Code
