Job Description
Occupational Therapist (OTR/L) - IDD Population The PRN Occupational Therapist (OTR/L) works with individuals diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to assess their functional abilities and design therapeutic interventions that address their unique needs. The goal is to enhance independence, improve motor skills, promote adaptive strategies, and improve overall quality of life through personalized therapy programs .
Key Responsibilities:
A. Assessment and Evaluation Conduct thorough evaluations of the individual's physical, cognitive, and emotional functioning. Use standardized tests and clinical observations to assess functional skills, motor abilities, sensory processing, and adaptive behavior. Develop individualized treatment plans based on assessments, goals, and abilities. B. Therapeutic Intervention D esign and implement customized therapy programs that may include fine and gross motor skill development, sensory processing strategies, self-care, social skills, and cognitive exercises. Focus on developing skills that promote independence in daily living activities such as dressing, feeding, grooming, and communication. Provide recommendations for assistive devices or adaptive equipment to improve functional independence. C. Collaboration and Teamwork Work closely with other healthcare professionals such as speech therapists, physical therapists, social workers, and caregivers to ensure holistic care. Communicate progress and therapy updates with families, guardians, or other team members as necessary. D. Documentation and Reporting Maintain detailed, accurate, and up-to-date records of individual progress, therapy plans, goals, and outcomes. Document all therapy sessions and interactions according to regulatory and organizational standards. Provide reports or recommendations regarding individual progress or changes to treatment plans. E. Training and Education Provide training to caregivers, family members, or staff on implementing therapy techniques and supporting individuals in daily activities. Educate individuals and caregivers on strategies to improve functional skills at home, in school, or in the community. F. Compliance Ensure adherence to all relevant regulations, including state licensure requirements, ethical standards, and company policies. Follow all safety protocols and promote a safe environment for individuals and staff.Qualifications:
A. Education Bachelor's or master's degree in occupational therapy from an accredited program. B. Licensing and Certification Current and valid certification as an Occupational Therapist (OTR/L) through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). State licensure as required by the state of employment. C. Experience Experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities is highly preferred . Experience in a clinical or community setting providing therapeutic services is a plus. D. Clearance Requirements Criminal Background Check Motor Vehicle Record Check Child Abuse Clearance Authorization to work in the United States Reports to: Occupational Therapy Program Coordinator E. Competency Requirements Strong ability to assess, plan, and implement individualized occupational therapy interventions that promote independence and functional skill development. Knowledge of developmental disabilities and their impact on motor coordination, sensory processing, and activities of daily living. Excellent communication and collaboration skills for working with interdisciplinary teams, families, and caregivers. Ability to provide education and guidance to caregivers and staff to ensure consistency of therapeutic strategies across settings. Proficiency in using adaptive equipment, assistive technology, and evidence-based techniques to support functional progress. Strong organizational and documentation skills to manage caseloads, monitor outcomes, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards. Empathy, patience, and adaptability to meet the individual's physical, emotional, and cognitive needs of each person served.Work Environment:
PRN OTR/Ls work in field-based settings depending on the needs of the individuals served. As a PRN therapist, you will be working on an as-needed basis , meaning hours may vary. Flexibility in scheduling is important. The role requires travel to visit individuals in community settings or homes .Benefits:
