POSITION SUMMARY
The Occupational Therapist provides occupational therapy services to students whose physical, sensory, or developmental needs impact their ability to access and benefit from educational programs. Working collaboratively with the student's educational team, the Occupational Therapist supports student participation, independence, and functional performance within the school environment. This position serves as an itinerant member of the Special Education Cooperative, delivering services across participating districts in accordance with individualized education programs (IEPs), state and federal special education requirements, and best practices in school-based occupational therapy.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provide occupational therapy services to students served by the ESD 105 Special Education Cooperative in accordance with IEPgoals and educational needs. Participate as a member of multidisciplinary IEP teams to develop, implement, and monitor therapy plans, procedures, and recommended interventions. Conduct initial evaluations, re-evaluations, and ongoing assessments to determine student needs and the educational relevance of occupational therapy services. Design and implement developmentally appropriate therapeutic activities that support student functional skills, movement, sensory processing, and participation in school routines. Support students with disabilities in accessing and integrating into educational programs by promoting independence and effective participation in learning environments. Recommend, support, and consult on the use of specialized equipment, adaptive materials, and assistive technology to meet student needs. Maintain accurate documentation, records, and reports in compliance with Washington Administrative Code (WAC), cooperative procedures, and professional standards. Provide consultation, training, and support to classroom staff and supervise Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTAs) as assigned to ensure consistent implementation of therapy strategies.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Knowledge of occupational therapy principles, evaluation methods, and evidence-based school-based intervention practices. Knowledge of fine motor, visual-motor, sensory-motor, and perceptual development as they relate to educational performance. Knowledge of sensory processing disorders and strategies for supporting regulation, attention, and participation in the classroom. Knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, and related special education regulations that guide eligibility, service delivery, and documentation. Knowledge of assistive technology, adaptive equipment, and environmental modifications that support student access and ndependence. Knowledge of motor development milestones and functional skill expectations for PreK-12 students. Knowledge of functional, curriculum-based assessments used to identify student needs and develop measurable goals. Knowledge of collaborative problem-solving practices for working with teachers, families, IEP teams, and multidisciplinary service providers. Knowledge of data collection, progress monitoring, and reporting procedures within educational settings. Knowledge of strategies that support students' participation in daily routines such as handwriting, self-care, transitions, and classroom activities.
Skills in:
Designing and implementing individualized occupational therapy interventions to support student learning and functional independence. Collaborating with teachers, families, and multidisciplinary teams to develop and monitor IEP goals and accommodations. Assessing student needs using standardized and curriculum-based evaluation tools. Analyzing student performance and functional outcomes to guide therapy planning and instructional support. Communicating complex therapeutic information clearly to educators, parents, and students. Adapting classroom environments, routines, and materials to enhance accessibility and participation. Providing training and consultation to staff on strategies for supporting students with sensory, motor, or functional challenges. Managing caseloads, scheduling sessions, and maintaining accurate documentation in compliance with federal and state regulations. Applying evidence-based practices to support motor development, sensory integration, self-care, and academic engage.
Ability To:
Using data-driven decision-making to track progress, adjust interventions and report outcomes to IEP teams. Assess student functional needs and design individualized occupational therapy interventions to support educational performance. Work independently while exercising professional judgment within established guidelines and district policies. Analyze student performance data and functional assessments to inform therapy planning and instructional support. Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, families, and educators to implement solutions that support student success. Communicate complex therapeutic strategies clearly and adapt explanations for diverse audiences. Adapt therapy approaches in response to changing student needs, classroom environments, or curriculum demands. Maintain accurate documentation of services, progress monitoring, and compliance with federal and state regulations. Travel to multiple school sites or districts as needed to provide direct services, consultation, or training. Manage multiple priorities and caseloads while meeting deadlines and maintaining quality of service. Promote student independence and participation through creative problem-solving and evidence-based interventions.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Master's in
Occupational Therapy Experience:
Experience providing occupational therapy services in a clinical, pediatric, or school-based educational setting, including collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to support student needs.
Certifications/ Licenses:
Current Washington State Department of Health Occupational Therapist license. Valid Washington State Educational Staff Associate (ESA) certification in Occupational Therapy.
Background Requirements:
Successful completion of a Washington State Patrol WATCH check is required. A fingerprint-based background check through the Washington State Patrol and FBI in accordance with OSPI and district policy.
Preferred Qualifications:
Three (3) or more years of experience providing occupational therapy services in pediatric and/or school-based educational settings.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work Environment:
Work is primarily conducted in school settings, including classrooms, therapy rooms, gyms, playgrounds, and other instructional or support spaces. The environment is active and dynamic, often requiring flexibility to move between locations and adapt to varying schedules, student needs, and classroom routines. Noise levels and sensory conditions may fluctuate depending on the setting. Regular interaction with students, teachers, administrators, families, and multidisciplinary teams is expected, fostering a collaborative and student-centered atmosphere. The role may involve exposure to a wide range of student behaviors and learning needs, as well as occasional travel between schools or districts within the region.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following conditions: Significant (66%+ of the time): Working directly with students in school settings, requiring continuous interaction and supervision across classrooms, therapy rooms, gyms, playgrounds, and hallways. Sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods during therapy sessions, classroom observations, and transitions between spaces. Visual and auditory attention to assess student performance, monitor safety, and respond quickly to needs. Emotional stamina to maintain patience, professionalism, and supportive engagement while managing a wide range of student behaviors. Frequent (33-66% of the time): Bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, or moving to student level to support activities, therapy exercises, or adaptive tasks. Using fine-motor skills and manual dexterity to manipulate therapy tools, adaptive equipment, written materials, and assistive technology. Performing repetitive motions associated with therapy and educational support (e.g., modeling handwriting, cutting, positioning, prompting movements). Moving between multiple classrooms or school sites during the workday, often on tight schedules with frequent interruptions. Occasional (up to 33% of the time): Lifting, carrying, or physically assisting students and/or equipment, typically 25-50 lbs and potentially more when using assistive devices, following safety guidelines and training. Traveling between schools or districts within the cooperative/region, including loading/unloading materials. Attending evening or weekend commitments such as IEP meetings, parent conferences, or professional development.
