This position will include travel including overnight stays, a high level of autonomy, and the ability to have a huge impact on an individual's independence. You will be provided with a company vehicle and company credit card. All overnight expenses are paid by the company. As one of the Occupational Therapy professionals on our team you will provide driver training related to the specific driver rehabilitation services contracted. You will use a company vehicle for all service delivery.
OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST ASSISTANT JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Summary The Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) supports the process for driver rehabilitation services contracted; particularly therapeutic driver training intervention. As the person evolves in their role and in this specialized field, opportunities including acquiring certifications that support services related to vehicle fittings may be explored. Services are provided for clients identified with disabilities that may interfere with their ability to drive a motor vehicle independently. Professional judgment and clinical knowledge are used to develop individualized interventions based on occupational performance deficits in the area of driving and community mobility. The occupational therapy assistant regularly collaborates with the lead occupational therapist and other disciplines and services to optimize client outcomes. The occupational therapy assistant is expected to independently review the client's evaluation, progress, and consult with the occupational therapist regarding intervention strategies. Clinical reasoning and professional judgment are essential to ensuring the safety of clients and protecting liability of the company and the professional. Errors may result in serious harm to clients. Essential Duties and Responsibilities 1. Reviews and synthesizes the comprehensive evaluation report from the OT evaluation of an individual's abilities or potential to become a safe and independent driver. The evaluation includes screening of medical and driving history; a clinical evaluation of physical, visual, perceptual and cognitive skills; and assessment of seating needs where applicable. It includes an on the road assessment in an actual driving environment using equipment similar to that which may be recommended. 2. Based on the driver evaluation, provides driver training, with or without adaptive equipment, in a vehicle that is matched to the driver's individual needs, including adaptive equipment as necessary. Training includes progression to licensure as appropriate as well as procurement of appropriate licensure restrictions. 3. Consults with the therapist, providing and making recommendations for targeted, evidence-based intervention to facilitate component skill deficits and occupational performance towards the goal of driver independence. 4. Provides consultation (in conjunction with or as directed by the OT) to direct the client to the optimal outcome for their individual needs. Consultation may include aiding in vehicle selection, consulting regarding the stowage of a mobility device, providing input regarding seating concerns behind the wheel, or other concerns. 5. Monitors and reassess the effects of intervention (directly provided by the therapist or provided by another means) and the need to continue, modify, or discontinue intervention. 6. Occasionally provides vehicle fitting service at the vehicle modification site to assure the client's proper interface with their adaptive equipment, including stowing assistive devices and transfer safety in and out of the vehicle. Fittings include the client driving at the location of the vendor to assure successful use of all equipment before the vehicle is released to the client. 7. Independently seeks assistance from supervisor regarding difficult cases or situations. 8. Documents occupational therapy services to ensure accountability of service provision and to meet standards for reimbursement of services. 9. Prioritizes and schedules work tasks independently. 10. Communicates regularly with the central office and communicates schedule changes to as soon as they are recognized. 11. Maintains clinical and administrative records in accordance with professional standards, state guidelines, and Driver Rehabilitation Services, P.A. policy. 12. Adheres to federal and state legislation, regulation, and policies that affect occupational therapy practice. 13. Reviews occupational therapy services for quality improvement and makes changes as needed to ensure quality of services. 14. Market Driver Rehabilitation Services, PA to potential referral sources. 15. Participate in lectures and speaking opportunities as requested to aid in marketing services and facilitating knowledge of services to university students, peer groups and professional organizations. 16. Aid in research projects related to driver rehabilitation including facilitating collaborative interactions and commitments with university professors and other professionals to aid in data analysis and publication expectations. 17. Aid in training other occupational therapy assistants or driver instructors in direct service delivery skills and in learning the internal systems and structure for Driver Rehabilitation Services, P.A.
Qualifications:
  • Have successfully completed and graduated from an accredited occupational therapy assistant professional program recognized by NBCOT and have completed all fieldwork requirements.
  • Two years of experience as an occupational therapy assistant preferred but not mandatory.
  • Certification by National Board for Certification of Occupational Therapy.
  • Current license by the North Carolina Board of Occupational Therapy.
  • Extensive travel and overnight stays required.
  • Internet access, proficient in word processing, and possess above-average internet skills. Has own computer and cell phone to utilize.
  • A valid North Carolina Driver's license and 4 years of experience as a licensed operator of a motor vehicle
  • Not had a conviction for a moving violation totaling five or more points in the last three years
  • Not had a revocation or suspension of driver's license in the last five years

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • May provide supervision and support for new staff in training as requested.
Equipment to be used:
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle. Will utilize a company vehicle for service delivery.
  • Must have and be able to operate computer.
  • Must be able to learn to operate assessment tools including but not limited to: vision machines and reaction time machine.
Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to bend, lift, and assist with client transfers.
  • Must be able tolerate sitting and standing for sustained periods of time.
  • Must be able to configure vehicle with appropriate equipment for client needs, including use of tools to aid in vehicle set-up with adaptive equipment.
  • Must be able to aid with physical assist of client's and adaptive equipment such as loading of a wheelchair or walker.
  • Must regularly lift and/or more up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include far vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must pass a physical examination and drug screen if requested.
Working Environment/Conditions:
  • Occasionally called upon to work odd schedules.
Works in the field providing services at the client and vendor's locations. Work often includes overnight/hotel stays at the company's expense in the location of the client. Full time or Part Time but need high flexibility. We are a small business, serving the driver needs of individuals throughout the state of North Carolina. $38.00 - $42.00 per hour
