Job description We are looking for a passionate Ophthalmology Technician (PRK) to join our team of skilled professionals and provide health care services to our veterans and their families at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. Great opportunity to be credentialed with a federal healthcare organization!
SCHEDULE
Monday -
Friday:
7:30 - 4:30PM No nights, no weekends, no on-call, no overtime

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Shall assist with all aspects of patient care, to include but not limited to, checking-in patients, escorting them to treatment areas, and performing initial medical screening of patients including history, distance and near visual acuity with and without correction or pinhole, pupillary light reflex, applanation tonometry and manifest refraction.
  • Accurately prepares room & patient for examinations, therapeutic measures and procedures assuring all needed equipment and supplies are available prior to the start of the exam.
  • Takes, monitors, and records physiological measurements.
  • Performs medical treatment, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures per extender treatment protocols.
  • Prepares and administers medications under the supervision of a nurse or health care provider.
  • Chaperones patients, when necessary, by escorting them to various offices or clinics.
  • Assembles, maintains, and operates medical, diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. Performs ophthalmic studies including, but not limited to, auto refraction, keratometry, tonometry, visual field tests, ophthalmic photography, or other relevant diagnostic testing.
  • Maintains or assists with appropriate and accurate health record storage and retrieval systems.
  • Prepares and submits administrative reports.
  • Provides patient/parent education as requested.
  • Establishes sterile field and assists with minor surgery and major eye surgeries to include but not limited to: cataract, pterygium, blepharoplasty, ptosis, glaucoma, lid tumors, and strabismus surgeries.
May be required to assist with laser refractive procedures such as
PRK/LASIK.
Directs and/or attends wet lab training to maintain or advance skill set.
  • Upon completion of procedures and examinations, properly cleans and organizes room and performs any necessary cleaning of equipment as established by departmental policies and procedures and standards.
  • The technician shall be primarily required to perform ophthalmology services. When the services are not required, or the technician's services are more urgently required elsewhere, the technician may be assigned by the Chief of Ophthalmology Services or designated representative to provide support in Laser Center.
  • Ensure all equipment is properly cleaned and stored at the end of each work shift. Ensure preventive maintenance and routine cleaning are performed as directed.
  • Ensure a safe work environment and employee safe work habits.
  • Has knowledge of medical terminology to interpret departmental instructions/guidelines and to provide instruction.
  • Maintains a professional manner and displays a positive cooperative attitude.
Qualifications:
  • Ophthalmology Technician shall have a minimum of a high school Diploma or GED Equivalent. This individual shall be current in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.
  • Certification of an Ophthalmology Technician from Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel accredited program in Ophthalmology is preferred.
  • The Ophthalmology Technician must have at least 6 months experience as an ophthalmology assistant, in the last 12 months.
Life Support Certifications:
Must possess and maintain current Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS). If applicable, maintains current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications. These Certifications must be current at all times, at no additional expense to the government.
