POSITION SUMMARY
BostonSight is a nonprofit eye healthcare organization and research center dedicated to saving sight and improving quality of life for patients. Founded in 1992, the Needham, MA, Center of Excellence includes a clinic, research center, state-of-the-art FDA-certified and ISO- compliant manufacturing lab, and patient and family support center. BostonSight PROSE™ Treatment is available at top medical centers in the U.S., Canada, and India. BostonSight SCLERAL was launched to expand access to global scleral lens technology. BostonSight envisions a world where no one suffers loss of sight from corneal irregularities or ocular surface disease. The Ophthalmic Assistant provides chair-side doctor assistance, performs diagnostic tests as required by the optometrist and/or ophthalmologist, and administers treatment as allowed and ordered by the doctor. The role also maintains a quality eye care facility.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or equivalent Two-year's experience in a healthcare setting; eye care preferred COA certification preferred but not required An equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed below, may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Care and compassion for patients with corneal disease and visual diminution Ability to escort and transfer patients with mobility problems and/or low functional vision Knowledge of medical and ophthalmic terminology is preferred Capacity to instruct / provide motivation to patients to achieve goals of device application, removal and care across a broad range of patient capabilities Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills; attention to detail; computer literacy Achieve technician certification status after one year's experience at BostonSight
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
COMMUNICATION
AND PATIENT CARE
Use of Lensometer (automatic and manual) Take an accurate patient history when seating patients Perform Visual Acuity and Pinhole tests Review patient intake forms and document accurate chief complaint/history of present illness Record and/or review patient medication list Over-refraction using trial lenses Perform testing as requested by OD/MD Set up slit lamp camera for doctor as needed Ensure that room and monitors are set up properly for doctor, i.e. ASP/FitConnect/EyeMD Monitor patient flow, ensuring patients are seated promptly at the time of scheduled appointment and/or when lenses come out of the laboratory Maintain communication and expectations between lab, patients, doctors, and front desk. Maintain exam room equipment in working order and notify appropriate staff member when malfunction occurs
PATIENT EDUCATION AND TRAINING
Provide patient with instructions and educational materials in application and removal of scleral prosthetic devices used in PROSE treatment Review and document device/lens care with patient
CLINIC ADMINISTRATION
Ensure exam rooms are cleaned between patients, including the disinfection of equipment Clean and stock all exam rooms on a regular basis Disinfect and prepare all devices used by doctors Autoclaving of all instruments and application and removal plungers Maintain and monitor patient schedules in computer program (ASP/Eye MD) Prior authorization for medication as required by insurance companies Other duties and special projects as assigned The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed.
