Gambrills, Bowie, and Annapolis We are a doctor-owned (husband-wife) private practice with three growing locations, seeking a detail-oriented, self-motivated, and dedicated team member to join our expanding business.

Position Summary:

The Optometric Technician plays a crucial role in supporting optometrists by performing pre-examination testing, assisting with patient care during exams, and maintaining accurate medical records. This position involves interacting directly with patients, performing a variety of diagnostic tests, documenting results, and ensuring that the optometry office runs smoothly. Optometric Technicians are an integral part of providing high-quality patient care and contributing to the overall efficiency of the practice.

Key Responsibilities:

Pre-Testing & Initial Patient Interaction:

Greet and prepare patients for their eye exam, gathering necessary health and vision history. Conduct preliminary tests, such as visual acuity measurements, refractive testing (auto-refractor), and intraocular pressure (IOP) readings. Administer basic diagnostic tests like retinal imaging, visual fields, and corneal topography, ensuring patient comfort and understanding. Assisting the

Optometrist:

Assist the optometrist during the eye exam by handing instruments, documenting findings, and ensuring the patient is properly positioned. Provide support for various tests, including but not limited to, fundus photography, OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography), and other specialized diagnostic tools. Explain test procedures to patients to ensure clarity and ease during their visit.

Scribing & Record Keeping:

Accurately document the optometrist's findings in the patient's electronic medical record (EMR), including visual acuity, diagnosis, and treatment plans. Enter prescription details for glasses or contact lenses into the system and help patients understand their vision prescription. Maintain up-to-date patient records, ensuring compliance with confidentiality and privacy regulations.

Patient Education:

Provide education on eye health, including proper care of contact lenses, post-exam instructions, and guidance on managing eye conditions. Explain follow-up procedures or referrals to other specialists, as advised by the optometrist.

Equipment Maintenance & Inventory:

Ensure that diagnostic equipment is cleaned, calibrated, and functioning properly. Monitor the office's optical supplies and assist with ordering inventory as needed.

Scheduling & Administrative Support:

Assist with patient scheduling, confirming appointments, and ensuring a smooth patient flow in the office. Answer patient inquiries and help with insurance verification or paperwork when necessary.

Qualifications:

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required. Certification in Optometric Technology or related field preferred (e.g., COA - Certified Optometric Assistant).

Experience:

Previous experience in an optometric setting or a healthcare-related field is highly desirable, though on-the-job training is available.

Skills:

Strong attention to detail and the ability to work with precision in a clinical setting. Excellent communication skills for interacting with patients and staff. Basic understanding of optical equipment and diagnostic tools used in eye exams. Patient documentation practices. Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and comply with privacy laws (HIPAA).

Physical Requirements:

Ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time. Manual dexterity for handling small tools and equipment. Ability to lift or move light equipment (up to 25 pounds).

Work Environment:

The Optometric Technician will work in a clinical optometry office or medical facility. The role involves working closely with patients and optometrists in a fast-paced environment with exposure to various diagnostic technologies and equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Certification as an Optometric Assistant (COA) or Optometric Technician (COT). Experience with specific optical equipment such as OCT machines, fundus cameras, and automated refractors.
