Job Description

High Point University is currently seeking a full-time Optometric Technician. The Optometric Technician supports both the clinical and educational missions of High Point University School of Optometry's program. This role provides direct patient care in the clinic while assisting faculty and students in the delivery of high-quality optometric services. The technician also contributes to the training of optometry students by modeling professional behavior, clinical excellence, and patient-centered communication and care. This position will be cross trained in additional administrative or optical support to enhance overall patient flow and support the mission of the institution.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Associate's degree required, OR High School diploma with 2+ years of clinical experience in an optometry setting
Experience and Training:
At least 1 year of clinical optometry experience in a professional or academic setting Proficiency with Microsoft Office and basic office technology Experience in using electronic health record (EHR) system(s) for patient documentation, data entry, and chart management
Knowledge, Skills, Ability:
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal Knowledge of basic ocular terminology and proper use of optometric instruments Self-motivated with a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to accuracy and detail Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks effectively Ability to work collaboratively with various groups of faculty, staff, students, and external partners Knowledge in HIPAA and OSHA regulations
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Perform preliminary patient testing, including visual acuity, auto-refraction, tonometry, visual fields, retinal imaging, OCT, and other diagnostic assessments Prepare exam rooms and maintain clinical instruments according to infection control and calibration standards Assist faculty and student interns during patient encounters, including contact lens fittings, dry eye testing, and special testing procedures Accurately document patient information and test results in the electronic health record (EHR) system Manage patient flow to ensure clinic efficiency and a positive patient experience • Serve as a resource to student interns regarding proper use of instruments and clinical workflow when necessary Participate in staff training and continuing education activities that align with the academic and clinical goals Adhere to HIPAA, OSHA, and institutional policies regarding patient safety and confidentiality Participate in quality assurance and clinical improvement initiatives Contribute to the overall mission of the university by fostering a collaborative, student-centered environment
