7 Newark, NJ Job Details Full-time $31.18 an hour 1 day ago Benefits Health savings account Disability insurance Health insurance Dental insurance Flexible spending account Pension plan Employee assistance program Vision insurance Prescription drug insurance Pet insurance Qualifications CPR Certification Certified Ophthalmic Assistant BLS Certification Full Job Description About the Role The primary purpose of Ophthalmic Technician (Per-Diem) is to provide advanced level technical support to the Ophthalmology Clinics, Faculty and Residents, and to perform various services, as directed, to facilitate patient care and efficient clinic operation. What You'll Do Performs and accurately documents, either electronically or in written form, intake patient interview to include: chief complaint and HPI; Review of Systems; past, family, medical and social history; patient medication list. Performs, under direction of an ophthalmologist, basic and advanced level ophthalmic screening procedures as outlined by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
Screening procedures to include:
visual acuity by Snellen and ETDRS measurement; Potential Acuity measurement using PAM; Amsler grid testing; automated lensometry, refractometry, and keratometry; manual keratometry; automated Humphrey visual fields; corneal topography; measurement of intraocular pressure with Tonopen; contact lens insertion, removal and care instruction. Performs routine patient care under the direction of an ophthalmologist to include: measurement of height, weight, temperature and blood pressure; and point of care blood glucose testing and urine pregnancy testing.
Assists with physician performed procedures:
assembles and prepares equipment, supplies and paperwork per protocol; ensures that required registrations, time-outs and consents are in place. Performs daily maintenance of clinical exam rooms, before, during and after clinic sessions, ensuring that that required equipment and supplies are in place and ready for patient service.
What You'll Bring Required:

  • 2 years of experience as an Ophthalmic Assistant or as an Ophthalmic Technician.
1) JCAHPO (Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology) Certification at the Ophthalmic Assistant required at hire. Ophthalmic Technician certification to follow within one (1) year of hire as an Ophthalmic Technician. Current certification in a related field considered for substitution. This substitution is made on a case by case basis. Examples of acceptable certificates are optometry, surgical technology, or foreign medical graduate with experience in Ophthalmology.
