Job Description:
POSITION SUMMARY
The Ophthalmic Assistant generates important preliminary information to be used by the ophthalmologist; reviews patient status and performs medical tests. Essential Job Duties Reviews patient chart to ensure completeness and accuracy of information. Performs testing required by type of exam scheduled, patient complaint and history. Is able to take an ocular and systemic history and accurately record visual acuity. Is able to perform lensometry, refractometry, applanation tonometry, basic muscle balance testing, assess pupils, assess the anterior chamber, confrontation visual fields and gross external exam. Administer topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the direction of the physician. Assists with in-office procedures ensuring proper informed consent is obtained, sets up and cleans up from procedures. Triages patients and determines priority for appointments, as well as provides education and instructions on a variety of ocular complaints/diseases. Refills patient medications through Electronic Health Record system.
