In this role, you will be responsible for bringing used optometry and ophthalmic instruments—such as exam chairs, exam stands, slit lamps, phoropters, and other equipment—back to optimal functional and aesthetic condition. This includes troubleshooting equipment issues, repairs, cleaning, sanding, painting, reupholstery, and calibrating equipment.
Key Responsibilities Refurbishment & Restoration:
Sand, prime, paint, and finish worn or damaged examination chairs, stand units, and handheld devices to "like-new" aesthetic standards.
Mechanical & Electrical Repair:
Disassemble, diagnose, repair, and reassemble electro-mechanical systems and diagnostic instruments.
Component Replacement:
Replace worn-out components such as bulbs, wires, gears, screws, etc.
Calibration & Quality Control:
Calibrate and align optical systems (slit lamps, projectors) to ensure they meet manufacturers' specifications and high standards of accuracy.
Preventive Maintenance:
Perform routine maintenance on equipment to prevent breakdowns.
Documentation:
Maintain detailed logs of repairs, parts used, and maintenance performed on each piece of equipment.
Shop Safety & Organization:
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized workspace. Properly handle, store, and dispose of paint, solvents, and hazardous materials.
Required Skills & Qualifications Mechanical Aptitude:
Proven experience in mechanical repair, troubleshooting, and reassembling complex machinery.
Refinishing Skills:
Experience with sanding, painting, and cosmetic surface finishing (auto body repair experience is a plus).
Dexterity:
Excellent hand-eye coordination for handling small, delicate optical and electronic components.
Technical Knowledge:
Familiarity with basic electrical systems and using multimeters for testing.
Tool Proficiency:
Experience with hand tools, power tools, soldering irons, and precision instruments.
Detail-Oriented:
Ability to maintain high cosmetic and functional standards.
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent (Technical school training in electronics or biomedical equipment is a plus). Physical Requirements Ability to stand, bend, and crouch for extended periods. Ability to lift and move heavy ophthalmic equipment.
Pay:
$43,000.00 - $50,000.00 per year
