Position Summary An Ophthalmic Assistant is a vital person in a Retina practice, assisting in both clinical and administrative duties. They play a critically important role assisting the physician with delivering outstanding patient care from the moment the patient first contacts the office by phone or email to the moment they leave the office. Exceptional customer service and communication skills in writing, by phone, and in person are essential to our practice. We are a small office where collaborative teamwork, self-motivation, punctuality, dependability, honesty, and professional behavior are highly valued. Roles and Responsibilities
  • Schedule patient appointments and verify insurance benefits, check patients in at the front desk, collect payments, check patients out at the conclusion of their visit.
  • Assist with patient intake and gather medical history while ensuring compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Perform work-up exams for Retina patients including, eye pressure measurements, instillation of eye drops, document findings in electronic medical record system.
  • Maintain accurate and complete notes in the medical record system about every patient encounter
  • Assist in procedure room for intravitreal injection procedures including surgical tray assembly and clean-up, rinsing Betadine from eyes, and bringing patients to and from the room
  • Educate patients about post-procedure restrictions, warning signs, and drop use
  • Set up, store, and help with equipment maintenance
  • Assist with opening and closing duties
  • Perform diagnostic tests such as Optical Coherence Tomography, Fluorescein Angiography, Visual Field testing, applanation intraocular pressure testing, etc.
  • Provide phone and fax support to patients and referring doctors' offices. Collaborate with Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, and other staff members to ensure efficient patient flow and care.
  • Obtain prior-authorizations
  • Educate patients and their care-givers about post-procedure care.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by addressing patient inquiries and concerns.
  • Other duties as assigned Experience Required
  • Minimum 1 year in Ophthalmology or Optometry office preferred
  • Strong understanding of Ophthalmology and medical terminology
  • Experience in a medical office setting, including patient care and intake procedures.
  • Proficiency typing on a computer
  • Proficiency using Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems
  • Proficiency sending and receiving electronic faxes
  • Proficiency using the Internet
  • Experience with aseptic techniques
  • Retail experience is a plus, including front desk operations Education Requirements
  • minimum high school diploma or GED preferred Physical Demands The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, squat down, and use both hands to feel, grasp instruments, small bottles, and operate office equipment.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects weighing 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Duties of this position require intact vision allowing for full use of near vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to change focus. Must be able to type 40 words per minute accurately. Benefits
