Optician 1800 Town Center Drive, Reston, VA 20190 $22.31 - $25.48 an hour - Full-time $22.31 - $25.48 an hour - Full-time Job Summary We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Optician to join our healthcare team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of ophthalmic care, optical products, and patient service. As an Optician, you will assist patients in selecting eyewear, perform measurements, and ensure accurate fitting while maintaining compliance with healthcare regulations such as HIPAA. Your expertise in optical technology and patient communication will contribute to delivering exceptional eye care experiences. Duties Assist patients in selecting appropriate eyewear based on prescriptions, lifestyle needs, and personal preferences. Take precise measurements of patients' eyes, including pupillary distance and frame fitting to ensure optimal vision correction. Educate patients on lens options, frame styles, and proper eyewear maintenance to enhance satisfaction and compliance. Operate optical equipment and laboratory tools to prepare lenses, verify prescriptions, and ensure quality standards are met. Maintain accurate medical records and documentation in electronic health record (EHR) systems such as Epic or other EMR platforms. Support the clinical team by understanding ophthalmology terminology and assisting with basic eye assessments when needed. Manage retail sales transactions efficiently while providing excellent customer service in a retail environment. Follow aseptic techniques during lens fitting and laboratory procedures to uphold safety standards. Stay informed about new optical products, medical billing procedures, and updates in healthcare regulations including HIPAA compliance. Requirements Proven experience working as an Optician or in a related optical or ophthalmology role with clinic experience preferred. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology related to the eye, and ophthalmic laboratory procedures. Familiarity with EMR systems such as Epic or similar platforms for managing medical records and documentation. Strong understanding of retail sales principles, retail math, and inventory management within an optical setting. Ability to interpret prescriptions accurately and communicate technical information effectively to patients of all ages, including pediatrics and senior care populations. Basic knowledge of medical coding and medical billing processes relevant to ophthalmic services. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to provide compassionate care while maintaining professionalism under HIPAA regulations. Demonstrated ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
