Job Description

About the Role Use your clinical training in anatomy, physiology, and patient care to develop a specialized skill set in orthopedic footwear therapy. This is a hands-on apprenticeship role under direct supervision of a board-certified Pedorthist (C.Ped.). Starting Scope Greeting patients and establishing the patient relationship from the moment they arrive — you set the tone for the entire visit Therapeutic depth-inlay shoe fitting under Medicare's Lower Extremity Amputation Prevention (LEAP) protocol Learning and applying Medicare policy to determine patient eligibility and coverage Calculating copays, deductibles, and patient balances quickly and accurately at the point of care Processing and reconciling patient payments EHR documentation Direct patient relationships with a medically complex, predominantly elderly population Patient education on diabetic foot care, amputation prevention, and therapeutic footwear compliance Use of shop equipment and hand tools to fabricate and modify custom foot orthotics — full training provided The Certification Pathway We fully sponsor your ABC Certified Fitter - Therapeutic Shoes (CFts) examination — the credential that defines your clinical scope in this specialty. From there, candidates pursuing the clinical track advance toward the ABC Certified Pedorthist (C.Ped.) credential, which includes lower-limb biomechanical assessment, gait analysis, custom foot orthosis fabrication, and custom shoe specification. That progression is real, structured, and supported. Who We're Looking For Candidates with clinical training who want patient contact, a defined credential pathway, and meaningful orthopedic specialty work: Foreign-trained physicians or medical graduates seeking US clinical experience Athletic Trainers (ATC) or Physical Therapy Assistants (PTA) Certified Medical Assistants with direct patient care background Candidates with working knowledge of lower-extremity anatomy, diabetes complications, or musculoskeletal pathology The Patient Population Persons with Diabetes Mellitus and complications affecting the foot, including peripheral neuropathy, vascular impairment, Charcot arthropathy, foot deformities, wound care risk, and fall risk. Therapeutic footwear for this population has been mandated as medically necessary by Congress since 1993. According to the CDC, diagnosed diabetes prevalence has risen over 50% in the last decade. In Massachusetts, diabetes-related medical costs exceed 10% of the annual healthcare budget. The clinical need is large, growing, and underserved.
