Responsibilities of the flight critical care paramedic include evaluation, coordination, and delivery of medical care provided to patients during all phases of transport. Must be familiar with scope of practice of the transport team and the State rules and regulations in which the transport team operates. Works with the other transport team members to coordinate care of the patient during transport; once called, readily available/arrive at specified location, within 30 minutes before wheels. The flight critical care paramedic is responsible for completing the quarterly and annual requirements to maintain active flight status to include: completion of intubations quarterly, attendance at staff meetings, and annual: airway course, mock codes, annual online training program, safety and infection control, aircraft / personnel security briefing, equipment and supplies competency / currency validation, medical screening update, wellness form, EMS Rules and Regulations, and Haz-mat recognition and response.

10-Hours of rest following each mission
- Candidate must live within 1-hour of the Fort Lauderdale Base.
PRE-FLIGHT RESPONSIBILITIES
- Obtains medical report from Medical Coordinator or designee, to include addressing diseases affected by altitude. May obtain Medical Intake information at direction of medical leadership or designee.
- Completes pre-flight checklists, as well as respiratory checklists, including ventilator.
- Calculates oxygen, secures oxygen appropriate to patient needs, allowing for delays and/or change in patient condition. Selects, assembles, and verifies respiratory equipment, specifically the ventilator.
- Assures medical equipment is accounted for, properly functioning, and securely stowed on the aircraft.
- Familiar with location and use of equipment and supplies, to include all medications.
- Assures additional medical equipment/supplies are available for the specific needs of the patient condition and needs, based on available patient report and distance of transport.
- Logs out controlled substance/ narcotics box per policy.
- Communicates condition, acuity, and any unusual issues with entire transport team.
- Reviews dispatch sheet with Medical Coordinator and Flight Crew, noting any special instructions.
- Participates in pre-flight debriefing with other members of team, including pilots.
TRANSPORT RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs a complete head to toe assessment of the patient (to include neuro, skin, HEENT, neck, chest, cardiac, abdominal, pelvis, GU, back, and extremities at a minimum). Assists with documentation needs with the Flight Nurse.
- Assures patient and passengers have all appropriate documentation, i.e., Passports, Visas, before departure from the discharging facility. Calls Dispatch if any uncertainty or questions as to appropriateness of travel documents
- Reviews release forms, waivers, DNR (when appropriate) to family member and/or patient
- Answers any questions and assures signatures are obtained prior to leaving discharging facility
- Safeguards' medical records, x-rays, etc. as per HIPPA regulations.
- Assists pilots, as needed, in baggage search for hazardous materials.
- Assures patient's medical records and personal belongings accompany patient.
- Coordinates the transfer of the patient to the aircraft maintaining continuity of care and insuring patient, passengers and belongings are secured.
- Assures compliance with minimum standard patient care requirements - see policy.
- Continuously monitors and documents patient's condition to include, but not limited to, head to toe assessment with updates, vital signs, continuous cardiac monitoring, and pulse oximetry, including documentation of cabin pressures hourly, treatment / interventions / medications performed, with responses noted, and pain scale 1 to 10 out of 10 noted with vital sign assessment with Flight Nurse.
Completes medical record documentation with Flight Nurse.
- Assures completion of Physician's Order form and completes the controlled substance inventory control form.
- Provides orientation and mentoring for new program/flight crew members.
- Assures adherence to universal precautions and initiates additional precautions deemed necessary by disease specific diagnosis and/or signs and symptoms.
- Communicates changes in patient's condition to Medical Coordinator, Resource Manager and Medical Director as needed.
Initiates flight schedule changes according to patient condition changes, keeping MC, RM and Medical Director as well as Dispatch informed of these changes. Any change in patient condition requiring contacting outside agencies must first be approved by Resource Manager and Medical Director or designee, as well as Dispatch and Operations team.
- Transfers care of patient and records to the receiving facility, documenting date, time, name, and title of healthcare giver turning care over to and obtaining healthcare giver signature prior to leaving facility.
- Maintains communication with Dispatch and Operation team in compliance with policy.
The medical team is to notify the Dispatch and Operations when they have made initial contact with the patient at bedside and when they have signed over the patient with the receiving facility and report has been given. More frequent communication may be necessary if there is a change in the patient's condition, in the flight plan, or unforeseen issues with the transport.
POST FLIGHT RESPONSIBILITIES
- Completes all medical record documentation pertinent to transport, whether patient or program driven.
- Assures equipment is cleaned and equipment/ supplies restocked and returned to cabinet. Communicates level of oxygen in aircraft on M tank to maintenance and medical coordinator.
- Assures rechargeable equipment is plugged in and charging (light on).
- Assures completion of forms and damage / malfunction of equipment, and report to CFN, if appropriate.
- Communicates quality issues on occurrence form to Director of Medical Compliance. Expected to have post flight documentation completed and assist in returning of medical equipment post mission within 45 minutes. Documentation is to be attached to the chart prior to departing home following the mission. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Active unrestricted Paramedic License, license to be maintained by employee.
- Required to maintain the following certifications:
ACLS, BLS, PALS, NRP, PHTLS
- Nationally Registered Paramedic certification preferred.
FP-C, CCP-C
strongly encouraged and preferred.
- UMBC CCEMTP or equivalent critical care training program strongly encouraged and preferred.

- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum associate level degree required.
- Minimum of 3 years' experience in a 911 transport EMS system/critical care transport/emergency care as a Paramedic.
- Ventilator trained and experience running transport ventilators.
- Successful completion of the medication, rhythm strip evaluation.
- Current
BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, PHTLS
- Active, unrestricted State / Government license. (depending upon home base location).
- Valid Passport with no restrictions to travel to/from and within the U.S. and foreign countries/ territories that the position is required to travel.
- Ability to arrive at specified location, within 45 minutes of wheels. (Time extensions granted on a case- by-case basis.)
- Successful completion of the ground school and orientation program.
- Supplies current licensure and/or certifications on a continual basis. Employees are responsible for maintaining active PM License.
- Expected to answer phone while on call.
SCHEDULE 9 DAYS ON 6 DAYS OFF
Rotating schedule. Employee is at home on call and will receive a 2-hour call out before wheels up time. Minimum of 10 hours rest is given following the completion of every mission Employee must be within (1) hour from Fort Lauderdale, Florida base
