Job Description

Overview The work involves responsibility for making definitive patient care decisions under stressful situations, as well as effectively directing, or working with, others at an emergency scene. A Paramedic is a New York State certified emergency responder capable of effectively delivering advanced emergency care and treatment to those sick or injured in various, sometimes physically demanding, situations. Work is performed in the office and in the field. Supervision is exercised over subordinate personnel. The work is performed under the clinical supervision of the assigned supervisor and the administrative supervision of the Emergency Medical Services Director. A Paramedic does related work as assigned. Duties Determines and professionally delivers appropriate and required emergency patient care to persons suffering from problems related to trauma or medical emergencies Assesses emergency scenes for responder safety and potential emergency resources required Operates emergency response motor vehicles Communicates findings to, and requests medical direction from, a medical control physician Documents and verbally reports emergency care provided to all patients Coordinates emergency response with other local emergency care providers, and assists with the necessary patient care at either the basic or advanced level Communicates with (or interviews) patients, patient's family members, and bystanders as necessary Demonstrates the proper operation of the emergency medical equipment on which the Paramedic is trained Effectively communicates to groups or individuals the benefits of advanced life support and is conversant in the dispatch policy for advanced life support services in Livingston County Calculates weight and volume ratios for medication administration Maintains and ensures proper operation of emergency medical equipment Inventories and restocks emergency medical supplies and drugs (using established safeguards) Participates in emergency medical training with other Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel, which may occasionally include providing training for others Performs other related duties as assigned Requirements Possession of a current New York State Department of Health certification as an EMT-Paramedic; AND Possession of a valid New York State driver's license Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma Appointee must possess a current American Heart Association Health Care Provider CPR certification at appointment Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 125 pounds (250 pounds with assistance) Appropriate certifications and licensure must be maintained in good standing throughout employment An appropriate driver's license must be maintained throughout employment A driving record evidencing safe and responsible vehicle operation is required Must authorize and execute any necessary releases to enable the appointing authority to verify licensure and driving history involving violations and/or crimes Meet the Qualifications and Competencies set forth in the
