NORTH SIOUX CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT
Position Title Paramedic Reports To Fire Chief, or Designee FLSA Status Non-Exempt Employment Status Full Time or Part Time available Position Summary The Paramedic provides advanced life support emergency medical services, patient assessment, treatment, and transport for the North Sioux City Fire Department and Dakota Valley Emergency Services District. This position is responsible for responding to emergency and non-emergency medical calls, participating in department training, maintaining equipment and facilities, supporting department operations, and serving the community through professional and compassionate patient care. The Paramedic works collaboratively with career and volunteer personnel to ensure the delivery of high quality emergency medical services throughout the district and surrounding mutual aid areas. Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesEmergency Medical Services Respond to emergency and non-emergency medical calls. Provide Advanced Life Support care within South Dakota EMS scope of practice and department protocols. Perform patient assessments and develop appropriate treatment plans. Administer medications and advanced interventions as authorized. Operate cardiac monitors, ventilators, IV pumps, medication administration systems, and other EMS equipment. Prepare patients for transport and provide continuing care during transport. Complete accurate and timely patient care reports. Participate in emergency medical responses within the district and mutual aid response areas as assigned. Maintain familiarity with local hospitals, specialty centers, and regional EMS resources. Participate in quality improvement activities and patient care reviews. Department Operations Assist with emergency scene operations as assigned. Support department initiatives, special projects, and operational objectives. Participate in department meetings, training programs, and community events. Assist volunteer EMS personnel and department members as needed. Maintain readiness of ambulances, medical equipment, and station facilities. Equipment and Facility Maintenance Perform daily ambulance inspections and equipment checks. Maintain inventory of medications and medical supplies. Report damaged, missing, or expired equipment. Assist with ambulance cleaning and maintenance. Maintain station cleanliness and organization. Volunteer Support and Development Assist with training and mentoring volunteer EMS personnel. Support EMS continuing education programs and department training initiatives. Participate in student ride along and field internship programs when assigned. Foster positive working relationships with volunteer personnel and neighboring agencies. Community Relations Represent the department in a professional manner. Participate in public education and community outreach programs. Maintain positive relationships with citizens, healthcare partners, neighboring agencies, and community stakeholders. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Current South Dakota Paramedic certification or ability to obtain reciprocity. Current National Registry Paramedic certification preferred. Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications. Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record. Ability to obtain North Sioux City Fire Department driver certification. Ability to pass department background investigation. Ability to meet department physical requirements. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience as a Paramedic in a 911 EMS system. Current National Registry Paramedic certification. Experience operating advanced cardiac monitors, ventilators, IV pumps, and other ALS equipment. Experience with ESO reporting software. Experience with Vector Solutions training software. Experience working in a combination career and volunteer organization. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Thorough knowledge of advanced life support practices and procedures. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and make sound decisions under pressure. Ability to function effectively in stressful and rapidly changing environments. Ability to work collaboratively with career and volunteer personnel. Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism. Strong customer service skills and a commitment to providing compassionate patient care. Physical Requirements The employee must be capable of performing the physical demands associated with emergency medical services operations, including: Lifting and moving patients and equipment. Climbing stairs and operating in confined spaces. Working in adverse weather conditions. Prolonged standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting. Wearing personal protective equipment and respiratory protection as required. Operating ambulances and emergency medical equipment safely and effectively. Work Schedule Paramedics work assigned shifts as established by the department. Scheduling may include days, nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, callback assignments, special events, and emergency staffing situations. Compensation and Benefits Compensation and benefits shall be established by the North Sioux City Fire Department and Dakota Valley Emergency Services District and may include health insurance, retirement benefits, paid time off, continuing education opportunities, uniforms, and other benefits authorized by the Board of Directors.
