There are more than 500 certified providers, both volunteer and career, who respond to more than 58,000 emergency calls on a yearly basis. Join this exemplary and dedicated team! As an Paramedic with the Department of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) you will: Assume responsibility of the provision of appropriate basic and advanced life support emergency medical and rescue activities at the Paramedic level. Provide supervision and care of patients in the pre-hospital environment including the utilization of monitor/defibrillators, medications, endotracheal intubation, IV therapy, and other associated tasks authorized at the Paramedic level; perform independently and as a member of the healthcare team in situations involving both basic and advanced life support activities. Direct the healthcare team including certified EMTs, Advanced EMTs, Intermediates, and Paramedics in the provision of medical care; work seamlessly with both career and volunteer personnel; exercise leadership and motivate subordinates to incorporate the department and City's vision and goals for quality service. Safely operate emergency ambulance and other light duty emergency response vehicles in emergency and non-emergency modes. Follow all emergency medical services regulations and applicable protocols. Complete reports and documentation accurately, efficiently, and within the required timelines including patient care reports, and equipment and apparatus checkoffs. Provide field evaluation and training to both basic and advanced life support personnel. Assume initial command of scenes involving multiple patients or complex incidents. Attend classes and perform those activities required to familiarize and maintain currency with the proper practices and procedures of emergency medical services to effect an efficient delivery of services. Effectively communicate and interact positively with coworkers, volunteers, patients, bystanders, citizens, and other public safety agency personnel. Sworn Public Safety Provider:

Click here for details. Starting pay will be the minimum of the pay grade unless a candidate has qualifying full-time equivalent experience. Full-time equivalent experience is employment in a licensed EMS agency at the Paramedic level. Also, every full year of active VBEMS volunteer experience will be counted as one-quarter of a year; four years VBEMS volunteer experience counts as one full year of full-time equivalent. Candidates with clearly defined full-time equivalent experience on their application may be placed in higher steps as follows: 0-1yr full-time equivalent experience = Grade Y24 / Step 1: $63,419 1-2yr full-time equivalent experience = Grade Y24 / Step 2: $65,728 2yrs+ full-time equivalent experience = Grade Y24 / Step 3: $68,057

Salaries for each step do not reflect budgeted salary increases effective after July 1, 2026 which have not been finalized. Actual offer amount will be presented at time of offer.
NOTE:
A $6,000 hiring bonus is being offered for this position set up in installments and subject to a repayment agreement The first installment of $3,000 will be paid after successful completion of Academy and release as an Attendant in Charge, second installment of $3,000 will be paid after a year of service as a released Attendant in Charge if performance is rated as "Meets Expectations" or higher.

Minimum Requirements:
MINIMUMS
Must be 18 years old at the time of employment. Current Commonwealth of Virginia and/or National Registry Paramedic certification; or have completed an accredited Paramedic certification program and hold an eligibility to test letter. Must obtain certification prior to first day of employment. Must be and remain eligible to function as an Emergency Medical Vehicle Operator in accordance with Virginia Department of Health EMS Regulations and City/Departmental policy. Must refrain from using all tobacco products on and off the job. Must have a current and valid drivers license.

In addition to the minimum requirements, the ideal candidate for this position will have experience listed in the preferences below. Candidates with the preferred experience should ensure the information is provided in the application. Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate's degree or higher in a related field. Active service, in good-standing, as an attendant-in-charge with a Virginia Beach EMS volunteer rescue squad. Experience in a combined (volunteer/career) EMS agency; experience working with volunteers. Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Note 4 of 4: Based on established workforce development parameters and policy, sworn EMS department operational Paramedics may be eligible to receive a two-step pay increase (approx. 6%) at 3 years of employment, a 10% pay increase in year #6 and a two-step pay increase (approx. 6%) in year #9. These increases are in addition to any merit/general increases the City provides to all full-time employees. Rotating shift paramedics are typically prescheduled for 208 hours of overtime each year by the nature of their schedule. V RS Contribution:
All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
