Job Description

Our Surgery Schedulers are responsible to help patients transition from their cataract consultation to being ready for surgery. They meet with patients to help them navigate all of the things that need to be addressed before surgery - insurance, payment options, preoperative instructions, and scheduling. This job is much more comprehensive than simply keeping calendars and setting appointments. This role is responsible for scheduling ophthalmic surgeries at the ambulatory surgery center and local hospitals. Serves as liaison between patient, surgeon, facility, etc. Position requires good understanding of ophthalmic practice and insurance processes. Requires considerable attention to detail. Ability to communicate with patients, surgeons, co-workers and supervisor is critical. Must be willing to help in all areas.
PREREQUISITE SKILLS
Previous experience with comprehensive scheduling of patient procedures/surgeries. Working understanding of medical insurances. Knowledge in medical terminology and general anatomy is recommended. Demonstrated oral communication skills needed to develop and maintain patient and/or employee rapport including the ability to speak clearly, concisely, and professionally. Demonstrated effective and appropriate customer service skills. Written communication skills necessary for charting and documentation. Organizational skills necessary to multi-task. Demonstrated ability in handling patient confidentiality. Ability to work with peers in a team situation. Willingness to travel to various locations to fulfill responsibilities. Demonstrated computer keyboarding skills and basic Windows knowledge. Ability to work with different scheduling software systems. Ability to work in a fast-paced setting.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following list describes the essential duties of this role. Individuals in this role may not perform all of these duties, or may perform additional, related duties not listed here. According to practice protocols schedule patient procedures and coordinate schedule with patient, facility, and physician's schedule, provide patient with all of the necessary information regarding their procedure including and provide facility with necessary information regarding patient status, date, time, insurance information, etc. Obtains patient consents according to practice protocols. Coordinate changes in patient procedure dates. Communicate with physicians, personal assistants, and surgery center staff regarding schedule and schedule changes. Addresses patient's questions/concerns utilizing appropriate customer service skills to instill understanding and confidence. Knowledge in understanding the procedures and ability to explain competently to patient. Promptly reports any patient questions/concerns requiring manager's attention. Coordinates pre-operative testing. Performs timely member verification and eligibility as necessary for managed care plans including appropriate communications with health plans, patients, physicians, and personal assistants. Gather medical information and documentation for pre-certification process. Obtains referral numbers and pre-certification numbers for all required services by contacting the insurance carrier or primary care physician. Updates Practice Management System with all information necessary received by carrier in order to expedite payment of claim including but not limited to the pre-certification number and the primary care physician's referral number. Updates manager regarding changes in managed care plan procedures. Maintain an electronic database of all phone numbers for contacts at surgery departments and insurance carriers. Communicates all denials of scheduled procedures and tests to appropriate staff. Perform all duties respectful of confidentiality and safety of all patients, employees, and doctors. Treat all patients, referring physicians, referring physician's staff, vendors, and visitors courteously and with the utmost respect. Protect all medical information against loss, defacement, tampering and unauthorized use. Displays professionalism in all patients, doctor, referring doctor and employee contacts. Displays empathy with patients. Consistently displays positive rapport with fellow employees. Cooperates in a respectful manner with management staff and doctors. Demonstrates initiative in accomplishing practice goals. Attends meetings as required by management.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to read data from and enter data into the computer, must be able to write, and be able to communicate via phone. Ability to sit for long period of time without many breaks.

From $18.00 per hour
