Full Job Description Position Title:
Bilingual Hearing Health & Family Navigator Full Time:
32 hours a week Summary Serves as a bridge between families, clinical providers, and community resources. This unique role combines patient advocacy with hands-on clinical support. Working within the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) field, the Navigator ensures that infants who refer on newborn hearing screenings and their families receive the education, diagnostic services, and emotional support needed to thrive. Duties and Responsibilities
Family Navigation & Coordination:
Provides navigation assistance for infants, children, and families, including newborn hearing screening follow-up, diagnostic hearing evaluation coordination, referral management, and connection to recommended next steps. Assists families in understanding the significance of a newborn hearing screening "refer" result and the importance of timely follow-up.
Bilingual Communication & Family Support:
Able to communicate effectively in both Spanish and English. Supports patient and family centered communication and shared decision-making by helping families understand available services, appointments, and recommended next steps.
Care Coordination:
Works collaboratively with UNM and PEI teams, the
NMDOH EHDI
program, birthing facilities, community providers, and other partners to coordinate timely follow-up for infants who refer on newborn hearing screening and children newly diagnosed with hearing loss. Tracks infants and families through their care pathway to ensure continuity and prevent loss to follow-up.
Barrier Identification & Resolution:
Helps families identify and address barriers to care, including transportation, lodging, scheduling, insurance/funding challenges, communication barriers, and other social determinants of health.
Telehealth Support:
Supports families in navigating telehealth platforms and troubleshooting connectivity issues for remote consultations.
Resource Development:
Assists in the adaptation or translation of educational materials to ensure they are culturally appropriate for our diverse population of patients.
Clinical & Diagnostic Support:
Acts as a support role in the audiology clinic, including serving as test assist during infant and toddler diagnostic testing. Assists with device/equipment prep and basic technical tasks to support clinic needs.
Hearing Technology Support:
Provides basic troubleshooting and family guidance related to hearing aids and cochlear implants under the direction of a licensed audiologist, including device care education and reinforcement of audiologist recommendations.
Education & Resource Navigation:
Provides families with credible, evidence-based educational resources related to pediatric hearing loss, newborn hearing screening follow-up, EHDI timelines, and available local and state resources.
Advocacy, Outreach & Community Engagement:
Serves as a culturally responsive advocate for families. Participates in and supports education and outreach activities with community partners, healthcare providers, parents, and other stakeholders to increase awareness of EHDI best practices and available resources. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with these partners. Travels throughout New Mexico as needed to support outreach, education, and direct family engagement.
Data Tracking, Documentation & Compliance:
Documents navigation and clinical support activities and maintains accurate files, databases, records, reports, and other related documentation in accordance with protocols, institutional requirements, HIPAA, and grant expectations (if/when applicable).
Team Participation & Professional Development:
Participates in team meetings, trainings, quality improvement initiatives, and continuing professional development related to pediatric hearing loss, family navigation, cultural responsiveness, and community engagement.
Engagement & Communication:
Maintains regular communication with leadership and demonstrates a strong commitment to continuity, relationship-building, and long-term engagement. Minimum Job Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders, Public Health, Social Work, Early Childhood Education, or a related field (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Bilingual proficiency (verbal and written) in both English and Spanish required.
- 1-3 years of experience in a clinical, educational, or family support setting.
- Strong interpersonal skills, comfort with learning basic hearing technology troubleshooting (under the guidance of an audiologist), and ability to use telehealth platforms.
- Proficient in using standard office technology, including the independent use of digital communication tools and cloud storage systems, with ability to manage data entry.
- Analytical skills to identify service gaps and resolve barriers to care.
- Skill in acting as an advocate for families while maintaining professional clinical boundaries.
- Ability to communicate complex medical information in a simple, empathetic manner in both Spanish and English. Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a clinical setting (Audiology Assistant, Medical Assistant, or CHW).
- Experience working with New Mexico's Spanish-speaking, Native American, or rural communities.
- Familiarity with pediatric hearing loss, hearing aids, or cochlear implants.
- Strong interest in social work or audiology. Conditions of Employment
- Must possess a valid New Mexico driver's license and the ability to travel throughout the state for community outreach and engagement.
- Must pass a pre-employment background check.
- Continued employment is contingent upon grant funding availability.
- Willingness to travel statewide, including occasional overnight stays and visits to rural/tribal locations
- Must meet institutional immunization requirements (e.
g., Flu, COVID-19, TB) as required for clinical site access.
Pay:
$40,000.00 per year
