POSITION DESCRIPTION REQUIREMENTS
Under direction, interviews patients in clinics, assists and arranges various services for them as appropriate; does other related duties
EXAMPLES OF WORK
Schedules appointments and activities or programs based on patients' needs. Interviews patients entering clinic, or their relatives, to obtain needed personal and financial data, information regarding persons to notify in event of emergency, and medical history. Takes patients' weight, height, and temperature. Takes blood sample from client by a finger stick procedure and uses procedures which tests for hemoglobin levels and iron levels; documents findings and levels. In some jurisdictions, appointees may be assigned to perform venipuncture procedures, including blood draws from veins by vacuum tube, syringe or butterfly venipuncture methods. Matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Disposes of contaminated sharps, in accordance with applicable laws, standards and policies. Disposes of blood or other biohazard fluids or tissue, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, or policies. Organizes and sterilizes blood-drawing trays, ensuring that all instruments are sterile and all needles, syringes, or related items are of first-time use. Transports specimens or fluid samples from collection sites to laboratories. Completes medical forms. Enters required information into computer. Compiles data. Explains institution programs, services, and regulations such as visiting hours, also procedures required for completion of forms or applications. Obtains signed consent statement from patient to protect institution's interests. Escorts patients or arranges for escort to assigned activities, treatment, rooms or wards. Aids disabled patients undergoing physical examination. Informs appropriate staff of unusual problems or symptoms that patients exhibit. Sets up therapeutic or medical supplies, instruments, or equipment. Schedules the use of equipment or facilities. Prepares and maintains required reports, records, and files. Sterilizes instruments and equipment. Disposes of blood, noninfectious and infectious waste, personal protection equipment, and pharmaceuticals in accordance with applicable laws, standards, policies and guidelines. Proofreads material for accuracy and adherence to applicable laws and regulations. Promotes public or environmental health goals. Assists in keeping supply cabinets neat, presentable and well stocked Monitors expiration dates on medications, intravenous fluids, or sterile supplies. Applies established security/physical safety procedures and guidelines, including securing controlled substances and equipment. Maintains essential records and files. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of filing procedures. Knowledge of record keeping procedures. Knowledge of report writing principles. Knowledge of available community medical and health services. Knowledge of CPR. Knowledge of the standard methods, procedures, safety-precautions and tools used in performing venipuncture procedures may be required. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide using decimals, percentages and fractions. Ability to follow written and oral orders, directions, or plans. Ability to compare numerical material for accuracy. Ability to compare written or printed material for accuracy. Ability to follow flow-charts. Ability to keep accurate records. Ability to collect data through questioning, Ability to meet and deal with disturbed patients and their relatives. Ability to demonstrate sympathetic understanding of patients' conditions and problems and to deal courteously with patients. Ability to perform successful venipuncture procedures may be required. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. REQUIREMENTS LICENSE
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
NOTE:
In jurisdictions where appointees will be required to perform venipuncture procedures, appointees will be required to possess certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (CPT). Only authorized appointees holding such certification may perform venipuncture procedures. The responsibility for ensuring that appointees possess the required certification rest with the Appointing Authority.
