Job Description

Job Summary / Purpose The patient companion performs close and/or continuous observation of pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients who may be at risk for adverse events such as falls, self-injury or harm to others in accordance with the training and established methods and procedures of the hospital. The patient companion provides direct observation of patients as directed by a nurse. Essential Key Job Responsibilities Responsible for providing direct observation of patients as directed by the nursing plan of care and under the supervision of the nursing staff and/or nursing supervisor. Adheres to clinical policies and procedures when performing patient companion tasks Is flexible: copes successfully with a variety of situations, personalities and the changing work environment. Demonstrates understanding of the importance of safety Communicates with patients in a manner that is respectful of their age, culture, and education Only accepts delegated tasks competent to perform, and communicates need for additional information, assistance or guidance as needed Performs timely and accurate documentation as required by area of employment Greets patients and visitors with friendly manner upon arrival and orients them to the room/unit. Applies the knowledge and skills needed to do the job Keeps informed about practices, procedures, and new developments related to own work. Minimum Qualifications Required Education for Staff Job Levels High School graduate or equivalent Required Licensure and Certifications BLS within 30 days of employment Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Excellent interpersonal skills required Preferred Qualifications Previous experience in a healthcare setting preferred
